Reece Period attributed: Period 19
Member of the House of Valentinian dynasty.
Coins for this issuer were issued from 364 until 375.
Flavius Valentinianus was born around 321 in Pannonia. He rose through the military to high rank under Julian and Jovian, and after their deaths was chosen Augustus. He appointed his brother Valens as co-emperor in the east, and spent a lot of time defending the Rhine frontier.
Valentinian also faced severe revolts in Britain, which he sent Count Theodosius to suppress. Late in 375, Valentinian received a deputation of barbarians and grew enraged at their impudence; he fell into an apoplectic fit and died.
