Roman Temples in Britain

Principal investigator: Professor Tony King
Level: Personal research project

I am compiling a gazetteer of temples, shrines and holy places of Roman Britain, as part of the Fontes Epigraphici Religionum Celticarum Antiquarum project; a European research initiative sponsored by the Austrian Academy of Sciences. I have a database of approximately 400 sites throughout England, Wales and Scotland, and have also excavated/conducted fieldwork on three of them. Hayling Island (Hants), Funtington (W Sussex) and Meonstoke (Hants).

As you might expect, many of these religious sites have considerable artefact assemblages, and it would be very helpful to be able to consult the PAS on a research basis in order to check the material culture associations of individual sites in their regional context.
