Vikings north of the Tees?

Principal investigator: Elizabeth Ryan
Level: Masters degree

Does the Tees Valley form boundary of cultural influence in Viking-age North East England? The aim of this MA research (Durham University) is to identify if Viking influence extended northwards past the River Tees, or whether it was contained to the south of the river in what is traditionally Yorkshire. The research will cover a two hundred year period between AD 800 to AD 1000. The geographical focus of the research will centre on the River Tees, and evidence from three data sets will be used to determine the range of this cultural influence. The three data sets will be small finds recorded through the Portable Antiquities Scheme, place name evidence, and sculpture evidence within the same region.
