Viking and Early Medieval filigree beads and pin heads

Principal investigator: Kristine Friis Jørgensen
Level: Undergraduate

I am an undergradute at University of Bristol, currently doing research for my dissertation. I am doing research on Viking age/early medieval filigree beads and pin heads found in both the UK and Scandinavia. My aim is to make a catalogue of artefacts fitting this description, to research the use and meaning of these artefacts and to see if there was a connection to either gender and/or social status. These artefacts have been linked with Viking sites particularly in Scandinavia, but I am also looking into the possibility that they were used and made at Anglo Saxon sites in the UK as well. I intend to use the PAS database to find different examples of these types of artefacts, to see if there is a pattern in terms of the date, context and location.
