Principal investigator: David Swan
Level: PhD level research
David Swan is doing a PhD in Iron Age Numismatics at the University of Warwick. His current project evaluates Iron Age coin imagery and use in the Eastern and Southern Kingdoms, with comparisons to coin types throughout the rest of the UK included. While previous explanations have been provided, this project aims to provide and utilise statistical data on coin types for the first time to draw conclusions.
Statistical analysis will be used to identify the most and least common images to appear on Iron Age coins in hoards and amongst single finds. It is anticipated that this project will enhance our understanding of local and more widespread identities and beliefs within this period, through identifying whether specific images were preferred in certain geographical locations or contexts.
