Silchester Iron Age Environs Project

Principal investigator: Catherine Barnett
Level: Large scale research AHRC

Hi, I am the project manager for a University of Reading research project entitled the Silchester Iron Age Environs Project, lead by Prof Mike Fulford. It is a privately funded project staffed in the main by university staff but with input also from English Heritage. We are at the start of year 1 of this 5 year project and are currently undertaking the desk based assessment for our study area of SU609-SU692. The project aims to investigate the Iron Age origins of Silchester Roman Town and will examine features and monuments of all types for this period and the transition into Roman urbanisation. Discussion with the HER officers for Hampshire and West Berkshire indicates that their searches are incomplete due to spatial data confidentiality for many of the PAS finds. Ideally we would like to also look at the spatial patterning of these via GIS to look at clusters of activity/ relationships with landscape elements etc, If we are granted access to the full data, exact locations could be masked for publication purposes as you see fit. Best wishes Dr Catherine Barnett Research Manager, Silchester Iron Age Environs and Silchester XI Town Life Post Excavation Projects Department of Archaeology University of Reading
