Viking defences at Reading

Principal investigator: Kathryn Meheux
Level: Magazine or journal article

I would like to become a research level user in order to look at some early Medieval finds from Oxfordshire and Berkshire in more detail.

I'm currently working on a paper with my colleague from the UCL Institute of Archaeology, Dr Stuart Brookes, on the Viking defences at Reading and Viking activity in the Reading/South Oxfordshire area in AD871.

Two artefacts have caught my eye in the South Oxfordshire area and I would like to be able to look at the spatial data and obtain accurate grid references. One is located at Ipsden and one at 'South Stoke'. The location of these finds suggests that road systems and river crossings in South Oxfordshire were used during the Viking occupation of this area and follow the approximate line of the Saxon roads reconstructed in South Oxfordshire in an article in 'Oxoniensia' in 2012.

We are hoping to finish this paper by the end of 2013.

Sally Worrell, my referee is a friend and colleague at the Institute of Archaeology, where I am librarian.
