A review of ornamental metalwork during the late Roman to early Medieval transition within Southwest Britain

Principal investigator: Kirsten Jarrett
Level: Personal research project

I am currently undertaking personal research, using PAS data, on the following topics (and will use the contact form to register this research, and my completed doctoral research):

A review of ornamental metalwork during the late Roman to early Medieval transition within Southwest Britain

This research uses PAS data to consider how recent discoveries may aid understanding of cultural change from the late Roman to early Medieval period (c. AD 350-650) in Southwest Britain (Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Avon, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall), drawing upon completed doctoral research into identity during the late- to post-Roman transition in the Southwest. The distribution of this data will be considered in relation to topography, settlement patterns, and mortuary and ritual activity.

New discoveries in late- to post-Roman Derbyshire: recent finds in context

The significance of recently discovered late Roman and early Medieval artefacts reported through the Portable Antiquities Scheme is considered in relation to cultural change during the late 4th to mid 7th centuries, and compared to changes seen in other areas. The relationship of these finds to previous discoveries, to the evidence for settlement, ritual, and burial, and to topography, is being explored.
