An Emperor's debt to York? An investigation into financial effects of the House of Constantine on the East Riding of Yorkshire in the Fourth Century AD

Principal investigator: Dominic Coyne
Level: Undergraduate

Beginning with his elevation to Caesar at York in AD 306, the reign of Constantine marked a new period of prosperity for the Empire. Using numismatic evidence from the PAS database and other sources, I aim to ascertain if the period of Constantine’s reign and that of his successors resulted in a noticeable increase in the fortunes of East Yorkshire. To do this I will compare coin finds recorded in the PAS database, found mainly by excavation, metal detectorists and chance finds with statistical data from full archaeological investigations in the county, and elsewhere as a control measure.
