Land use and settlement in the Cray and Darenth valleys from the Neolithic to Roman periods (inclusive)

Principal investigator: Mike Atkinson
Level: Masters degree

In the process of researching and writing a dissertation for a Master's degree in archaeology at Birkbeck, University of London, under the supervision of Harvey Sheldon. The subject of the dissertation is land use and settlement in the Cray and Darenth valleys from the Neolithic to Roman periods (inclusive). I understand from Harvey that this is a subject that has not been investigated before, to his knowledge.

I have already sought and obtained SMR and HER material from both English Heritage (Greater London SMR) and Kent HER in shape file format for use in a GIS, and would wish to ensure that my research is as up-to-date and complete as is possible to obtain find information from the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.

The data which I seek from the PAS database is limited to that within the Cray and Darenth valleys and for finds dated to the relevant periods. I intend to plot these within a GIS in order to build up finds patterns and see how these relate to settlement and to communications routes.

I do not intend to visit the sites themselves and, bearing in mind the scale of reproduction, the GIS prints used in support of my dissertation are unlikely to be of any use to anyone seeking sites to visit.

My dissertation is to be handed in by the end of September 2010: in case of any extension or unforeseen circumstance, I ask that I be allowed enhanced access of the database until mid-November 2010.
