Roman Essex Hinterland Project

Principal investigator: Archaeology South East
Level: External project (UK only)

Dominic Perring (Archaology South East) is leading an English Heritage funded project to analyse the patterns of production and consumption in the Essex landscape during the Late Iron Age/Early Roman period. The study's main focus is on a restricted number of well-published excavations, but an attempt is being made to extend the analysis to the wider bulk of data available for the region. Amongst other data, we would therefore like to focus on the distribution of coins, with the idea that their precise dating and their function in economic exchanges make them excellent markers for the study of social networks.
