Thank You and Good Luck Roger

Published: 4 years ago Author:

Upon the retirement of Roger Bland from the British Museum, all in PAS would like to express a massive debt of gratitude to him for all he has done for British archaeology. His work bringing about the PAS and the reform of Treasure has not only ensured that the most important archaeological finds have been acquired by museums up and down the country for local people to learn about and enjoy, but has also led to a great advancement in knowledge through the recording and further study of these finds, and the identification of new sites that have come to light because of them. Best of luck for the future Roger...

The above statement sums it up. But on a personal level I would like thank you very much for letting me work in the PAS - a wonderful place to be.

Best of luck for the future, Roger! Your vision that is the Portable Antiquities Scheme has changed British Archaeology for the better - not many can make such a bold claim! You have also given so many young (and young-ish) archaeologists a chance in the sector, for which we are eternally grateful. The study of archaeological small finds has been reinvigorated in the academic and public imagination and the fruits of their study will play their part in advancing archaeological knowledge for many a decade to come. We hope that you will enjoy seeing these studies as well as the increased public engagement, and will miss seeing you at the helm of PAS.

I was really sorry to hear that Roger is retiring from the scheme, I remember the time I spent as FLO for South & West Yorkshire with great fondness. It was always brilliant coming down to London and spending time with the PAS family and I learnt such a lot during my time with the scheme. Roger was always extremely encouraging and know everyone will be sad to see him leave. I hope the scheme continues to be as successful as ever. Anna Carter (nee Marshall).

There's not much to add to the above except that I too am grateful for the opportunity you gave me to work for the scheme and for the leadership and support you have given.

Undoubtedly the end of an era. As well wholeheartedly endorsing what has already been said, I would like to add my personal thanks for your support in accepting an established metal detectorist into the PAS ranks and the world of archaeology. Hope to see you around and about in Norfolk, All the very best for the future. Garry

PAS is an incredible achievement and a fabulous source for archaeologists in Britain and abroad, so too are your many works on third century numismatics. All the best Roger!

Best of luck in the start of your new career Roger, like me, you'll find it the best move you ever made! There is no doubt that few people have achieved as much as you have done; who else can claim a million finds and to have set up an organisation that is the envy of archaeologists everywhere? Take a break and then get back to the coins.

I never got the opportunity to meet you Roger, but you are a inspiration to all and I wish you the best for the future. Thank you for PAS.
