Despite Tommaso Mocenigo’s death-bed warning, Francesco Foscari was elected Doge in 1423. Foscari spent much of his time as Doge engaged in war against Milan who was attempting to take control of northern Italy. After the death of his son, Francesco withdrew from his government duties and was eventually forced out of office by the council. Foscari died one week later. Francesco Foscari is buried in the Basilica de Frari.
