A silver huntsman's whistle of 16th century date. The whistle has been cut from silver sheet, rolled and soldered together. The whistle has three distinct elements: the mouthpiece, the body, and the open end. These are separated by discoidal collars soldered on to the body. These collars were made by a length of silver wire through smaller silver wire hoops. clearly visible due to damage in one section of the collar near the open end. The mouthpiece is incomplete, having lost most of its silver tubing in antiquity. The body is decorated with a rose/flower circumscribed by a square wit…

A late Medieval - early Post Medieval pottery fragment from a Low Countries white ware bird-shaped whistle dating 15th - 16th century. The fragment includes the mouth-piece of the whistle which may have also formed the tail of the bird. The fabric is buff-coloured with a pale lemon glaze. Part of the vessel wall remains around the mouth-piece tube which would have been applied to the vessel. The mouth-piece tube is curved and has a notch cut in the upper surface. Dimensions: length: 40.20mm; diameter: 12.37mm; weight: 7.76 g. Identified by Roy Stephenson Medieval and Post Me…

Dimensions: Length: 57.40mm, Width at mouthpiece: 9.21mm, Width at widest point, including decoration: 15.81mm, Weight: 6.12g Discussion: Date uncertain, but the unusual flanges suggest possibly 16th century date. A copper alloy musical instrument; a whistle or other similar pipe like instrument. The whistle is made from a cast tube of copper alloy. Towards one terminal is a semi-circular hole which is obliquely angled in profile to provide a lip which would give the whistle's sound. Half way between this end and the broken end is an incised line round the pipe, presumably decorative. The far end is broken, and there is damage on the lower part of the pipe. It is 66.07mm in length, 10.1mm in diameter, and weighs 15.59g. Very few copper alloy whistles have been recorded on the database. Some o…

Description: An incomplete 16th -17th century silver huntsman's whistle. This whistle is cut from silver sheet and soldered; it is cylindrical in shape. Two triple stranded wire collars divide the whistle into three sections; of which only the central section survives. This central section is undecorated and has a circular suspension loop soldered onto its underside one end. Fragments of the terminal sections of the whistle survive and are distorted, one of these fragments is flaring in width and therefore more likely to be the mouthpiece end of the whistle.

Probably a fragment from the middle of a child's toy whistle, and probably of late medieval to early post-medieval date. There is no exact parallel, but it would work well with the foliate motif at top (as blown) and the openwork saltire-in-circle tab at the bottom, through which a cord to secure it around the neck could be set. The lead artefact consists of a hollow cylindrical shaft that narrows, particularly internally, to one end and is flanked on either side by asymmetrical open work. On one side of the shaft the open work decoration is symmetrical to itself and has a length of 2…

18th-19th Century. Lead-tin or pewter alloy, cast, probable hunting whistle. Length 47.5mm, Width 18.7mm, Thickness 13.8mm, Diameter 18.7mm, Weight 22.8mm. Virtually complete, fair sized whistle - used for sounding a warning, attracting attention or signalling, especially hawking although this one has the unusual moulded decoration of a fox or hunting hound design at the terminal. Otherwise plain at the mouthpiece end other than the 'D' shaped sound hole and two transverse bands. The suspension loop is broken and unusually under the moulded head rather than in the usual position at the…

A post-medieval copper-alloy hawking whistle. The whistle consists of a horizontal cylinder with angled mouthpiece and cut out sound hole. At its inner end, this cylinder curves downwards, extending into a near-vertical handle. Above this handle, and facing in the opposite direction to the whistle cylinder, is a moulding in the form of an outward-facing bird's head. Feathers are depicted at the inner end of the head, where there are also two eyes in the form of punched rings and a backward-pointing crest. The beak curves downwards at the outer end of the head, its upper and lower s…

Cast copper alloy ‘hawking’ whistle of probable post medieval or very early modern date (1500 – 1800). The whistle is irregular (broadly cylindrical) in plan and circular in cross section. It has been badly corroded and has also been abraded by movement in the ploughsoil. The mouth of the whistle is slight tapered and there is an oval (tear-drop shaped) opening just beneath the mouth. The base of the whistle is open and tapered towards the base. The body is decorated with a series of incised turned lines which decorate the middle of the whistle and the base. The whistle also expa…

A complete cast lead alloy possible dog’s head hawking whistle terminal, dating to the Medieval period, probably between AD 1200 – 1500 (length: 29.5mm; width: 21mm; thickness: 14mm; weight: 25.0g). The dog’s head terminal is sub-triangular in plan with a hollow circular socket at one end (outer diameter: 14mm; inner diameter: 11.5mm), which continues and tapers downwards inside the artefact’s length. To either side of the socket mouth (left and right), the dog’s sub-triangular ears are depicted flat against the side of the artefact and point downwards. The top of the dogâ…

A complete copper-alloy post medieval whistle, 42.53mm in length and 10.33mm in width. U-shaped with a circular cross-section one terminal has a circumferencial groove and is filled with corroded iron, presumably deriving from the another object it was attached to. The outer face of this terminal also has a moulded foliate design. The whistle then bends abruptly and the second terminal has an open end with a seperate piece of possibly bone filling three quarters of it leaving a small space through which air could be blown. Behind this it a V-shaped notch and below it a decorative d…

A cast lead alloy (pewter?) whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from 1750 -1900. The bowl is damaged with the entire rim missing. It is cast and there are projecting blobs along the casting spur. The bowl is long and oval and sits relatively vertically. There is a short rounded spur on the heel instead of a flat platform which suggests a date later than 1600 (Ayto, 2002, Shire Album 37: Clay tobacco pipes). The stem has broken off. There is some decoration near the stem in the form of a row of arches in relief. The pipe bowl is 34.3mm high, measures 24.6mm from the broken end…
