A fragment from a copper-alloy brooch of Roman date, dating to c. AD 80-200. The fragment consists of just the bow. It is sub-triangular shape with a slightly concave reverse. No decoration is present on either side.  The object is a green / brown in colour and has a worn and abraded surface patina.  Measurements: 26.4mm length, 7.7mm width, thickness 3.5mm, weight 1.1 grams.

It is disc-shaped and its outer face is decorated with a raised ring around the outer edge and two smaller concentric raised rings in the centre. The three fields between these rings contain a white paste, with the middle ring retaining red enamel. To one side of the reverse there is a single-lug pin fitting covered with corroded iron and to the other side the remains of a small catch-plate, its hooked outer edge missing. The bow is thick but rectagnular in cross section. Roman copper alloy brooch that is a hybrid between a Polden Hill and a Wirral style. The pin mounting is in the polden Hill style, consisting of rearward facing lugs on either end of the wings that would have held the pin axis bar which is now missing. The bow of the brooch is in the Wirral style and consists of a double rectangular cell covering the top quarter, which contains traces of a red or orange enamel. Two angled low protrusions flank the apex of the bow and a shallow double grove running down the centre of the lower half completes the decoration. Date 75-175AD

The brooch has three concentric ridges of retained metal, with the spaces between possibly once infilled with enamel, although no trace now remains.
