A fragment of slate tablet, or writing slate of late Post medieval to modern, date, about AD 1850 - 1950.  The fragment has a chapfered edge, probably indicating it was made in a factory and designed to have a wooden frame applied to the edge. Frames are thought to have been routinely added to slates from the mid 19th century (Shaffrey, 2022, Finds Reserach Group Datasheet 56). The slate is also marked with guidelines. There is a grid of 8mm square on one face and parallel ruled lines spaced 16mm apart on the other face. The fragment is 38.3mm long, 22.8mm wide and 3.3mm…

Lead unidentified object, circular in section, and narrowing from 9.2mm diameter at one end to 7.0mm diameter at the other. It weighs 28.33g and is 81.5mm in length. The surface is extremely pitted. The object may have been used as a writing implement but it is a lead object of any date between the late medieval period and the 19th century with a purpose that we can only guess at.

Iron spanner, as kindly suggested by the finder. A large wrought iron object with a passing resemblance to an outsize key. The ‘bow’ is of angular quatrefoil form with concave faces between straighter edges; the stem is of rectangular section, and terminates in an E-shaped ‘bit’ with angular sides to its central leg and rounded outer edges to the others. The finder, a farmer, kindly suggests this is a 19th-century spanner for the removal of a wheel hub, though the distinct configurations at either end may hint at a range of related functions. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 180…

One of three rather undiagnostic chunks of chert found at the same time, this largest example may be part of a Mesolithic core. This piece appears to bear ridges from the removal of flakes, and was originally likely to have been part of a larger flake or core itself. There appear to be signs of retouch along one edge.

An undiagnostic chunk of chert, similar to those found to the east of Dinas promontory fort, at Porth Ruffydd (GAT-DDAA05). It is a possible worked piece, but it is not possible to classify the type of object. It may be of Mesolithic date due to the Trwyn Du findspot and the associated finds recovered at the same time (GAT-DDCB03 and GAT-DDD7D6).

Large copper alloy disc. Irregular shape and bent across the centre. 41mm in diameter. Lots of scratch marks on both sides but particuarly on the inside close to the fold. Exact function is uncertain but may be a scrap piece of copper alloy use to clean metallic/conductive parts on machinery. Form is similar to coins and tokens used as a 17th to 19th century love tokens, but the scratch marks on theinside suggest it had a more practical function.

A plaster cast of a decorated bone. Although the cast is modern, the original object from which the cast was taken has some similarities to Neolithic decorative objects. The object is 138.3mm long and 47.3mm in diameter. It is a very precise plaster cast of a cattle femur which was made in two pieces which have been glued together, allowing the detail from the inside of the hollow bone to be faithfully reproduced. A thin skim of fine plaster was then put over the top to hide the join. This outer layer has been decorated with incised lines. There are three bands of circumferential line…
