A lead alloy cup of uncertain function. It is circular with a slightly rounded base, with reasonably thin walls. The rim is slightly everted. One side has a split extending most of the way from the rim to the base. There is no material in it which probably suggests that it was a cup rather then a crucible, although some items like this have been listed on the database as bird feeders, see for example https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1047543. As no function is identified, a wide date range has been allocated. Dimensions: It is 45mm diameter at the top&nb…

Probable copper alloy Roman patera dish. It is in two pieces which do join but wear on the faces would suggest that they have been separate for many years - they were approximately 50m from each other in one field. They are heavily patinated with some corrosion and the pattern that would have been on the inside is now largely obscured by this. There is a decoration of concentric circles in the inside of the base, and around top of the outside of the rim there has been a line of decoration with short lines dropping from this at intervals. The remaining…

Post Medieval to Modern copper alloy probable handle or spout in the form of an Early Medieval style crocodile or dragon head. It originally had jewelled or glass or enamel eyes. The fineness of the raised decoration suggests that the head may originally have been enamelled. Possibly the handle to a walking stick or vessel. The basal collar has four attachment perforations opposite each other which means the attachments cannot have gone all the way through whatever it was attached to. It may have been riveted to a hollow tube to make a spout, or attached to something solid to act as a …

Late Medieval to Post Medieval copper alloy vessel fragment, probably a spout or a handle. The form is similar to that of coffee pots and if a spout it may relate to one from the craze for coffee that occurred in Britain between c1660 and c1700 AD. There are also spouts with zoomorphic terminals that date to between c1400 and c1600 AD. These are usually found with their terminals still attached and are more finely made, but the possiblilit that this is a crude contemporary copy cannot be dismissed. However, it is quite heavily made and may be a spout from some other vessel, or pos…

A circular copper-alloy lid from a vessel which may have contained a set of (possibly three) nested cup weights. It dates from the post-medieval period, most likely from the 16th or 17th century. The lid is in fair condition, with a smooth green patina in paces and some corrosion material The lid is circular with the fixing point and opposing catch points present. An example with a complete lid/hingemechanism can be seen on the vessel from North Yorkshire (SWYOR-2F0735).  This style of lid, with reinforcing struts, is characteristic of a post-medieval da…
