A damaged cast lead strap end of Early Medieval or Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1100, probably of Thomas Class E, and most likely to be type 4. The open end of the strapend has a surviving rivet hole in one corner. The toher long edge may be missing. The front is decorated with an interlace design that seems to owe more to Borre style than to Winchester style, but little of the overall scheme survives. There is a bend line across the middle, and the closed end is incomplete. The strap end is 37.5mm long, 18.1mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 9.78g. Compare NLM-FC835D, YORYM-5C766A …

Lead possible strap end fragment, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast straight-sided strip with a small rounded projection at its [presumed] inner end. A pair of drilled holes of diameter 2mm near the end may have served for stitched attachment. A moulded border which follows the edge of the plate, and a slight constriction with a broad moulded band carried diagonally across it may be relicts of a decorative scheme. The back is plain. This might be an example of lead dress fittings of the later Early Medieval period if the paired attachment holes are indeed correctly recognised, b…

Lead strap end. A cast rectangular plate with a split inner end where a pair of lead rivets of diameter 3.4mm and length 5.8mm pass through both leaves of the plate, being burred behind. The riveted end is divided from the rest of the plate by a beaded border which encloses a symmetrical figurative motif. The scene resembles a pair of draped Victories facing each other with a tall trophy between them, and, if this reading is sustained, it must be drawn from a later Roman coin. The back is entirely plain. Despite its straight outer end, this object presumably derives from Thomas's clas…

An incomplete lead probable early medieval strap-end. The strap-end is flat with curved sides, a broken upper edge and a rounded terminal with an in-situ circular-sectioned iron rivet at the terminal apex. The terminal has a vaguely zoomorphic appearance with two raised circles resembling eyes. The surface of the strap-end is decorated with a moulded pattern of cross-hatchings within a border of short lines. Behind the terminal are two slightly recessed sections of plate with dotted outer borders. The underside of the strap-end is relatively flat and decorated. There is an angle…

A broken lead strap-end dating to the late early-medieval period (c. AD 900-1100; Thomas' Class E). The strap-end is broken roughly half way along but the two conjoining pieces form a tongue-shaped plate with slightly expanding sides. The squared-off end has two small circular perforations, while the other end is rounded. The upper surface has a series of scratches that might resemble some sort of decoration but nothing substantial enough to identify it as one of Thomas' Types. The underside of the plate is slightly hollowed with other minor incisions and abrasions. The strap-e…

Incomplete Post medieval cast lead strap end with openwork eagle decoration AD1450-1600. This is a near complete cast lead strap end, it is formed of two opposed openwork scrolls that meet at the bottom where there is the attachment for a foliate design. There are two thinner scrolls, one upon each side of the strap end. The top of the larger scrolls do not meet, being cast on to a narrow collar. Between the scrolls is a cast openwork design of an eagle with outstretched wings, its claws resting on a globe attached to the point where the bottoms of the scrolls meet. The back of the st…

A late Saxon lead strap-end of Thomas Type A (circa 800-900). The strap-end is tongue-shaped, though most of the surface is worn. Two irregular rivet holes are located at the attachment end; this end is wedge-shaped in section rather than being split into two plates. The main body of the strap-end is slightly raised and appears to bear a decoration, though this is too worn to determine. The terminal tapers to a narrow animal-head; two curved lines are visible, representing the eyebrows or ears of the beast. Lead strap-ends of this type are unusual; a parallel comes from 'near Driff…
