A short cross cut halfpenny of John (1199-1216 AD). Class 5b, probably 5b3 or perhaps 5b2; dated to c. 1205-1207 AD. Initial mark missing. Mint missing, but likely to be London or perhaps Canterbury (see discussion below). Obverse depicts a crowned ruler facing; legend reads: [h]ENRICV[S] [REX]. The reverse depicts a voided short cross with quatrefoil in each quadrant; legend reads: (AR?)NAVD.O[N] [...]. Cf. North 1994 Vol I, No. 970b ii, iii. A hammered silver post-medieval penny of Charles I (AD 1625-1649). The coin is worn restricting reading and closer classification of the coin. It has also has been pierced, possibly for suspension, but as there is no evidence to suggest that the coin ceased to circulate as currency it has not been put forward as a potential candidate for Treasure under the Treasure Act.
