Object type: NET SINKER
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible net sinker. A weight made by rolling a sub-rectangular scrap of cast sheet lead, probably achieving a slightly overlapping seam though this is now disrupted, perhaps by removal of the object from the selvedge of a net or, given that it is lighter than many formal parallels, from a fishing line, as is kindly suggested by the finder. At nearby Flixborough, tubular lead net weights were dated to the Middle Saxon period. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 21.3mm, Width: 10.8mm, Thickness (sheet): 1.8mm, Weight: 8.43gms

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead shot. Cast ball with numerous tiny crescentic marks, possibly from gnawing by rats attracted by the sugary taste of lead corrosion product, or possibly from use as an improvised teething toy. The latter is perhaps less likely in this case as the size would be ideal to choke a troublesome infant, which one would hope was not intended. Patinated. The mass points to an intended use with a light fowling piece or ‘rook and rabbit’ gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800 Diameter: 12.8mm, Weight: 10.05gms
