Object type: SHOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible shot. A cast object comprising a strip or sprue of width 5mm with a series of seven peloidal balls, each of diameter 4mm and each at the end of a conical ingate. The strip is broken at one end and melted at the other. Patinated. This might be an expedient to cast birdshot or a blunderbuss or shotgun charge of pellets; a mechanical function seems unlikely given the soft nature of the material. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Length: 39.8mm, Width: 5.9mm, Height: 8mm, Weight: 7.86gms

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950 Length: 24.0mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 9.3mm, Weight: 23.22gms

Lead possible nail fragment. An oval fragment with a dimpled boss on its underside, here suggested to mark the location of a shank formerly sheathed in lead. Patinated. Similar objects from the vicinity retain parts of iron shanks which in this case is thought to be lost. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Length: 18.7mm, Width: 13.6mm, Thickness (at boss): 7.1mm, Weight: 5.22gms

Object type: CAME
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead window came fragment. A short length of cast H-section window came with a trapped fragment of dark degraded glass at one end on one side. Patinated. This came would have permitted the setting of two small adjacent panes. The glass is reverting to its constituent ingredients, which is a feature of a medieval ‘forest’ glass made using potash, rather than the more robust soda glasses of earlier and later times. The width of the slot suggests a thickness of c.2.5mm for the panes. The reporting of window came of medieval date among field finds is remarkably rare. Suggested …

Lead offcut. A fragment of cast lead sheet of structural gauge with a roughly textured underside [as cast] suggesting manufacture of the sheet using a sanded surface. This is the mark of a professional scheme of casting work. One or two adjacent edges are cut; the object has subsequently been partly melted. Patinated. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period. Whorls in other materials acquired lathe-turned globular forms from about the 13th century, which migh…

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A possibly moulded design has been partially carried over to one flat side only, unless these irregularities represent shrinkage in an open mould, and lipping appears on the opposite side. Patinated, and probably lightly distorted. The mass points to a primary function plying cord, if not as a flywheel for some other mechanical purpose. The size of spindle hole could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, but the possible decoration on one side might rather point to …
