A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub rectangular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equivalent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being s…

Lead alloy ingot. A round ingot of plano-convex section which has set in a shallow hollow, probably in a fine sand bed. A sand bed would be the usual requirement for a scheme of professional lead working. The metal retains a grey tint pointing to a relatively recent date though its inflexibility suggests this to be a eutectic lead alloy rather than lead. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Diameter: 50mm, Thickness: 7.9mm, Weight: 82.84gms
