A complete lead alloy semi-conical cast object, possibly a Medieval to Post Medieval standing weight c. 1200-1700.
The weight is triangular in plan, semi-conical with a D-shaped cross-section and is slightly bent near the apex. The base is smooth and flat and it stands firmly on it. An angular object has been impressed on the reverse face leaving two lines extending from the bottom and from one side and meeting at a tilted right angle. The weight is sub-square with slightly rounded/angled lower corners rendering it almost shield shaped. The sides are bevelled; the top straight edge strongly and there is a central symbol on the upper face cast in raised relief. The symbol comprises a tall capital letter J with horizontal arm at the top; and two further horizontal arms below; the central arm longer than the other two. The weight has been cast and is broadly conical in shape with a rounded apex and slightly concave base which contains the stub of an embedded iron shank with a square cross section. The shank runs up through the centre of the weight, with an opposing stub at the apex. The object has a white patina and is covered in multiple dents and linear gouges and scratches.
