A Post Medieval Russian flax bale seal from Archangel dating to 1861 The lead seal is a thick disc with two horizontal perforations running through the centre from edge to edge to accommodate a cord or wire which would have been used to attach the seal to a bale of flax. It reads: [A]PX. Б[...] / ДECЯT / AHДP[...] / [..]H[...]HЯ on one face and [...]ЯEHЬ / KPOHЬ / 2" COPTЪ / Я. K./ 1861 on the reverse. [A]PX. Lead shot. Cast ball, flattened on one side, perhaps by impact against a firm surface. Patinated. The mass may suggest this to have been fired from a pistol, or possibly a light fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Diameter: 13.8mm, Weight: 12.78gms

Lead ingot. Two interleaved fragments of thick cast lead sheet, both patinated: the more substantial of a greyer tint, the smaller being cream-coloured with a square nail hole of c.2mm towards its outer edge. This may suggest it to be collected from the later stages of the stripping of lead from a structural context. The heftier fragment is cast sheet metal of thickness c.8mm, and is folded around the other fragment, which is only 4mm thick. The ingot thus formed was beaten to consolidate its cohesion, a process leaving dents on one flat side, and was subsequently cut along one long e…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a tapered moulded aperture of diameter 9.5-10mm, Walton Rogers form A1; heavily patinated and abraded. The spindle hole size would admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date while its mass would permit this to be used to spin a yarn. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead lid handle, as kindly suggested by the finder. A small cast plano-convex handle with a central boss, and with an integral stalk or shank of diameter 4mm separating it from a basal expansion which presumably entered a lid made of a different material. This is comparable to the generally larger handles ascribed to tobacco jars, which usually have a vaguely floral appearance. Now crumpled. The metal retains its grey tint suggesting a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length (as found): 20.4mm, Diameter (at handle): 16.3mm, Weight: 5.75gms

A cast uncertain lead object, likely of Medieval to post-Medieval Date. Description: The object is a pointed oval in plan with flat faces and curved sides. One of the flat faces has shallow cast parralel troughs. Some indication of possible letters on these troughs is suggested but not certain. The objects has a flaky grey patination with some whiteness. The edges and points are heavily worn meaning their original form is uncertain. Measurements: 37.62mm long, 17.27mm wide, 10.2mm thick and 43.04g in weight. Discussion: Due to the incomplete nature of the object it has not been pos…

Lead weight, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast annular weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11mm. Shrinkage lines around the hole on one side suggest this was cast in an open mould. Though the form is identical to that of a cylindrical spindle whorl, the grey tint of the metal argues for a more recent date, and the mass exceeds that of almost all spindle whorls, whether intended for spinning yarn or plying cords. The function was perhaps, though, comparable, probably as a flywheel from light machinery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval to Modern, 1850-1950 Diameter: 3…

Lead and iron unidentified object. A small plano-convex discoid lead counter with the embedded relict of a small [2.2mm square on one side, 3.8mm diameter on the other] tapered ferrous metal pin passing through it off-centre. Densely patinated. A plano-convex form is known for Roman game pieces, but the iron inclusion would have no clear purpose. The finder kindly suggests a function for the object as a weight; its mass might qualify this as an [overweight] quarter of an averdepois ounce. The condition, however, hints at an earlier date. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval,…

Lead weight. Cast oval flat-sided weight with a probably drilled apical hole of diameter 3mm. One side bears the stamped circular motif of a [moderately] Celticised horse left with six small pellets arranged in a star pattern above its back. The metal retains a grey tint, probably arguing its recent date. The appearance of a motif drawn from the repertoire of Celtic coinage may relate this object to a series of modern base metal forgeries of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon coins distributed from a 'mint' in the Grimsby area. This is presumably an adaptation of a recent fishing weight with a sta…

A cast and engraved incomplete Medieval lead pointed oval seal matrix. c.1200-1300 Description: The matrix is pointed oval in plan. The device of the seal consists of two distinct shapes, the bottom is an eight pointed star with alternating short and long rays and an upper trident. Lead spindle whorl. Cast possibly plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.8mm, possibly Walton Rogers form A1. The surface is delaminated and flaked, possibly as a result of burning or of the unusually aggressive deterioration of the metal. The spindle size might admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, while the mass would have permitted this to have spun a yarn. Lead possible weight. A short cast tube of globular form with a large [diameter 16.7mm] central aperture; battered and lightly patinated. One end bears cut-marks; the other is lightly splayed. The form is not dissimilar to that of modern fishing weights used by sea anglers, though the hole could admit the selvedge of a large net. The modest degree of patina may point to a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Length: 29.7mm, Diameter: 25.3mm, Thickness (wall): 5.2mm, Weight: 63.43gms

Lead or lead alloy makers label from horse harness, a flat solid oval, which originally would have measured c47mm high by 41mm wide, but has now lost substantial parts of the decorative border at the sides & bottom edge.
