Iron nails. Eight wrought iron nail fragments, two retaining flat oval heads and with shanks of possibly square tapered section, though the flaking of corrosion may confer an inauthentically square section entailing the loss of the actual metal surface. The form of the more complete nails corresponds to Manning’s very common Type 1b/Inchtuthil Type E, which made up 87.3% of the nails from a hoard of 800,000 nails recorded from Inchtuthil fort on Hadrian’s Wall. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length (largest example): 98.5mm, Head Diameter [long axis]: 26mm, Combined Weight…

A complete spur rowel dating to the medieval to post medieval period (c.AD 1300-1600). The rowel is in the form of a 7-pointed star and each projection is flattened. In the centre is a separate iron rivet which is surrounded on both faces of the rowel by heavy corrosion products. The main object has a dark green patina, and the iron corrosion is a rusted orange / brown. Similar examples are illustrated in Read (2001: 41 & 66; refs. 347, 505-507). Similar examples can be found in the database e.g. WILT-433916

A hand-forged Medieval to Post Medieval wrought iron Axehead dating from about AD 1250 - 1800. The axehead has a near straight top-edge with slight curve to the end of the blade, and a slight bulge at the socket. The underside angles from the heel of the blade to the handle to form a tapering triangular shape. It starts to curve down at the socket, but damage here makes it impossible to suggest the extent of any possible "beard". The socket is triangulat in plan with a thickened butt-end and an overlapping wrought joint. The material appears to be wrought …

Iron staple. Wrought iron strip, sharply tapered to a point at either end and expanded in the middle, bent to U-shape. Enlarged by rusting. The pointed ends would be driven into timber to anchor a bracket, hinge or pipe in the hollow of the U. The mass indicates good survival of the metal core, and hence a probably relatively recent date, while the preservation of the pointed ends may suggest a structural timber has burnt to release the object in such good condition. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Length: 48.7mm, Width: 28.9mm, Thickness (undoubtedly with corrosion): 10.3mm,…

A heavily corroded iron object of unidentified form and function. Description: The object is a long iron implement. The top third of the object is a quadrilateral cuboid of around 12.67mm in width, whilst the lower two thirds is cylindrical tapering to a poorly defined point. The object is heavily corroded resulting in bulbous protrusions and concretions (one of which has a piece of flint in). This has warped the orignal form of the object and obsured its function. Iron unidentified object fragment. A cast concavo-convex conical object, with an indication of a square feature, perhaps lost from this site, and with a conical hollow 23mm deepwithin. Chipped at top and bottom. The finder kindly notes this comes from an area of Roman finds. However, Dr Kevin Leahy considers almost all cast iron objects are likely to date to the later medieval or early post-medieval periods at the earliest. A complete Iron latchlifter dating from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period, c. 100 BC - AD 800. Wrought iron stem with a projecting suspension hook at one end, and a plain bit formed by a projecting bar at a right-angle to the stem. The ferrous material is very corroded and damaged. The iron has a brown patina. The latchlifter is 126.16mm in length, 29.66mm at its widest with a stem diameter of 6.58mm. It weighs 17.69g. The bit is not of a complex form for use with a barrel padlock, so a use as a latch-lifter is suggested. The term ‘latchli…
