A complete Post Medieval cast iron shot dating from around AD 1700-1850. It is sub-spherical, solid and is pitted from corrosion. This size shot could have been fired as a single shot from a rabinet or Serpentine cannon, or from a larger weapon as part of grape or canister shot (see Civil War Artillery for gun and shot sizes). It has a diameter of 27.2mm (about 1 inch) and weighs 71.04g. Iron balls were also used  as ball bearings and in industrial processes, so cannot be certainly identified as shot.

A probable corroded piece of cast iron shot from the Post Medieval period, dating from around AD 1500 -1800. It is a corroded spherical solid shot. The small size of about 1.25 inch diameter, and low mass of 0.19 lb suggests use in a small cannon or hand gun such as a Serpentine. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecordingguides/shot/ which notes that iron balls may also have an industrial function in milling and crushing, so this object may not be a cannon ball. The ball is 31.8mm in diameter and weighs 90.15g.
