A sub rectangular piece of ceramic, crudely moulded. It is orange in colour with some large inclusions. It is a corner of a large, thick tile, with slightly inward sloping sides. One the top of the tile, two crossing lines have been scratched in while the clay was wet, presumably to enable adherence of plaster or similar. It is likely to be part of a hypocaust or box flue system. Found in the vicinity of Roman tile kilns and may possibly have been manufactured there, clay pits have also been identified at the site. Dimensions: 98mm long and 60mm wide, it is 31mm thick and weighs …

A fragment of a ceramic object, likely a tile of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The object is roughly parallelogram in plan and has a sub-rectangular cross section. The object has reddish-orange surfaces, margins, and core. The fabric has sparse to moderate, poorly sorted coarse quartz inclusions, along with possible sparse grog tempering. One side is largely flat whilst the other has the remnants of a paw print of an animal. Due to the size (23.21mm wide and 20.82mm), lack of clear claw marks, and asymmetry of the paw print, it is most likely the paw print of a cat. Dimen…

A sherd from a tile or possibly a vessel and probably of medieval/post medieval date (cAD1400-1800).  The sherd may be Verwood type pottery.  The fabric is fine with abundant small inclusions of sand, black quartz and red iron oxide.  The outer surface is oxidised to a pale pinky buff colour and the core is a reduced grey.  The pottery is hard fired.  There is evidence of abraded olive green glaze and the outer surface is decorated with two lines of three wavy combed lines which may be related to adhesion rather than decoration.    Dimensions: 5…

Ceramic building material. Pale grey reduced fabric with paler oxidised external margins, tile fragments. Two small fragments of handmade roof tile, with prominent striking off marks on the upper surfaces as formed, the lower surfaces being flat and smooth. The thicker fragment might be Roman but thick roof tiles, bricks and floor tiles were equally made at later dates, and the fabric and upper surface marks are very similar to that of the smaller fragment whose thickness is a good match for that of a Medieval roof tile.
