Lead alloy toy tankard. Cast cylindrical model of a tankard, hollow, with an integrally cast moulded handle projecting from the mould line along one side. It is possible that other features were set opposite, where two surface irregularities may be either stubs from another handle or casting flaws. At least four rows of tiny moulded dots ascend the vessel wall, and it has a slightly expanded foot ring. Forsyth and Egan (2005, page 293 no. 8.128) illustrate a toy lidded tankard of 17th or 18th-century date from London. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1675-1775 Height: 23.7mm, Diameter (…

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy possible spoon fragment. A scrap of cast lead alloy with one flat face, one with a triangular chevroned ridge, and broken on all its edges. The ridged side is here interpreted as the reinforcement of the meeting of stem and bowl. A grey tint may suggest a relatively recent date for the object while a partly delaminated appearance is typical of homemade spoons. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1800 Length: 20mm, Width: 15.9mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 3.80gms

Lead alloy spoon fragment. Cast handle from a teaspoon or similar, with moulded ovulos aligned down the centre line of its display side in a linear series which is continued by two or more stamped dots; bowl lost and terminal chipped. The metal is particularly pliable, so this was perhaps homemade. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1675-1775 Length: 61.7mm, Width: 10.7mm, Thickness (at lower stem): 2.3mm, Weight: 4.34gms

Lead alloy ingot. A round ingot of plano-convex section which has set in a shallow hollow, probably in a fine sand bed. A sand bed would be the usual requirement for a scheme of professional lead working. The metal retains a grey tint pointing to a relatively recent date though its inflexibility suggests this to be a eutectic lead alloy rather than lead. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Diameter: 50mm, Thickness: 7.9mm, Weight: 82.84gms

Lead alloy tobacco jar lid handle. Lead alloy possible toy fragment. A cast object comprising a vertically grooved cylinder with blind basal aperture of diameter 4mm, with a D-shaped integrally cast loop or handle on one side and a nozzle with expanded end and blind hole of diameter 2mm projecting from the opposite side.
