Copper alloy gun fragment. A thick cast plate with an oval end of plano-convex section bearing two drilled fixing holes of diameter 4mm, and sharply kinked beyond these to continue in two narrowed stages of lentoid section. The fixing point was secured against another, flat, part of the object while its continuation was probably open. Darkened by treatment with oil or lacquer in antiquity. Lead alloy possible tobacco jar lid handle. A cylindrical hollow plug with a broader bevelled skirt above it, for insertion into a lid of different material. The handle itself comprises a slightly waisted stem ending in a collared spherical element whence spring the arms of a symmetrical T-shaped form with drooping ends, all with rounded surfaces [one arm lost]. Tongue-shaped strap end with a pointed end, made of two sheets of thickness 0.8mm crimped together at the outer end with a rivet of diameter 1.8mm and length 2.7mm passing through both the strap and the inner ends of the plates. Textile fragments of an off-white tint are trapped between the plates, showing a whole strap had been discarded, and possibly illustrating the operation of sumptuary laws which restricted the use of leather belts to the better sort.
