A plaster cast of a decorated bone. Although the cast is modern, the original object from which the cast was taken has some similarities to Neolithic decorative objects. The object is 138.3mm long and 47.3mm in diameter. It is a very precise plaster cast of a cattle femur which was made in two pieces which have been glued together, allowing the detail from the inside of the hollow bone to be faithfully reproduced. A thin skim of fine plaster was then put over the top to hide the join. This outer layer has been decorated with incised lines. There are three bands of circumferential line…

A piece of window glass of Post-Medieval date. The piece is broadly a parallelogram in plan with a narrow rectangular section. The surface of the glass is degraded in a manner similar to that seen on plant ash glasses of the medieval to post-medieval periods, likely caused by general weathering. Finds Advisor Kevin Leahy states that the regular edges appear diamond cut rather than crozed as would be typical of earlier pieces. There are also no signs of fire rounding present. It is therefore likely that this piece dates to the late post-medieval period. The glass fragment is 23.…

Hollow-cast element now squashed inwards upon itself, originally of spherical or bulbous form. One side plain, the other with applied flowerhead decoration. Along one edge, an animal with wings, long tail and four legs, its head broken off. Entire surface gilt. 1.7 cm long. It is impossible to discern the original function and appearance of this object. It might possibly be part of a whistle, akin to the whistle from Horsey, Somerset, for which see Treasure Annual Report 2002, no. 125, dated to 15-16th Century. Probably 16th Century. In terms of age and as the object co…

A cast lead alloy (pewter?) whistle in the form of a pipe bowl, dating from 1750 -1900. The bowl is damaged with the entire rim missing. It is cast and there are projecting blobs along the casting spur. The bowl is long and oval and sits relatively vertically. There is a short rounded spur on the heel instead of a flat platform which suggests a date later than 1600 (Ayto, 2002, Shire Album 37: Clay tobacco pipes). The stem has broken off. There is some decoration near the stem in the form of a row of arches in relief. The pipe bowl is 34.3mm high, measures 24.6mm from the broken end…

Parallels found on: http://whistlemuseum.com/2009/08/13/antique-bronze-whistle-england-medieval-period-.aspx This site attributes the style to the medieval period, however the metalwork and production appear to be consistent with a post-medieval style.

An incomplete silver post medieval whistle dating from about AD 1500 - 1650. The tubular whistle is made of silver sheet and soldered lengthways along an abutting seam. A collar of spiralled silver wire divides the whistle into two sections. Comparison with more complete examples suggests there would have been a second wound wire collar and third section, now missing. The first section comprises an obliquely angled mouthpiece flaring from semi-circular in cross-section at the end, to circular cross-section half way along the first section. A handmade bone whistle of uncertain date. The whistle is plano-convex in plan with a flat top and curved base and is ovoid in section. A drilled or bored hole is present at the proximal end of the whistle creating a wind way, though this appears to be infilled with organic material, and a triangular recessed lip is carved into the flat upper surface exposing more of the wind way. A sub rectangular projection is present from the outer curved edge of the whistle within which is another drilled or bored hole. Lead alloy whistle. Short cast cylinder with a moulded and rounded end with a projecting and drilled lug for suspension, and with a D-shaped cut-out adjacent to a narrowed mouthpiece. Now bent. The robust construction might suggest this to have been for police or military use as an official issue, though whistles would also be used to control gun dogs.
