Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete 17th-century clay pipe with intact bowl, together with part of the stem. Around the top of the bowl is an incomplete rouletted design of impressed squares. The pipe itself is undecorated. The top of the bowl does not run parallel with the stem, which is indicative of clay pipes of the 17th century. The bowl measures 17.17mm in diameter. The stem measures 8.74mm in diameter, with the off-set hole measuring 2.8mm. An illustrated example of a similar pipe bowl can be found in Crummy (1988, 48; ref. 2195).

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
The slightly corroded head from a cast copper-alloy Roman Colchester derivative brooch with a double pierced lug spring attachment. The bow curves through over ninety degrees and expands into the head which has the pair of perforations uppermost. The lower hole appears to retain the remnant of the iron axis bar, judging by the trace of orange corrosion product. The upper hole is now blocked with corrosion, but would have held the chord of the spring, both of which are now missing. The wings are situated internally above the lug. They are both small and stubby and triangular in shape, …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete medieval composite buckle with integral box plate. The majority of the frame is missing. There is a central perforation at the junction of frame and plate which would have held a wire pin, the latter now missing. The waisted junction is moulded (min. W.: 12.25mm), with a pair of transverse ridges at the frame end and a further ridge at the start of the box plate. The plate is inscribed on it upper surface with black letter 'N'. It expands to a width of 18.85mm at the attachment end. The buckle is recessed on the lower surface to accommodate the strap. The strap would hav…

A slightly corroded single-looped sub-rectangular buckle of post-medieval date. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed; the frame protrudes slightly beyond the strap bar on either side. The bar is rectangular in cross-section. The iron pin has corroded in situ at one end. At the ends of the pin bar the frame is moulded, the knop divided from the rest of the frame by a groove. From the pin bar (W.: 29.75mm) the buckle narrows to a waist (W.: 27.55mm) before expanding to a maximum width at the outer edge. The curved outer edge is externally bevelled and travels down to a rebate groove; …

An incomplete cast copper-alloy object: probably a harness fitting of Roman date. At one end there is a flattened circular terminal with a thick raised border on its upper surface. Within the border there is a further raised concentric circle with a raised central dot. Between the raised elements there are recesses which may once have been inlaid; there are possible traces of red enamel within the concentric circle. The sides and reverse of the terminal are slightly convex. A thick circular section shaft extends from the centre of the reverse of the terminal. The shaft extends for c. 1…

A small discoidal cast lead object: probably a weight of post-medieval date. The base of the weight is slightly concave while the upper surface features a raised rim. Within the rim there appears to be moulded decoration within a low border. Unfortunately the detail is difficult to discern due to corrosion. It is probable that such a unifacially decorated object in lead would have acted as a small weight.

A fragment from a cast lead-alloy object of post-medieval date. The object has the appearance of a terminal with a circular cross-section. At on end is a slightly flared sub-circular terminal up to 9.35mm in diameter. This is rebated and it is unclear as it how it might have continued. On its underside is a circle of raised diagonal forming rope-like decoration. Below this is a moulded bird's head, somewhat reminiscent of Horus (the Egyptian falcon god). It is difficult to be certain whether the head is orientated longitudinally or not. On two opposing faces the head tapers to a point…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy medieval mount: probably a strap-fitting, although relatively elaborate, possibly decoratively applied to an object such as a casket (c. 12th century). The mount has truncated lozengiform terminals divided from the main bar by a ridged collar. There are rivet holes in both terminals although only one retains its rivet. On the reverse face a quatrefoil rove still fixed to the rivet abuts the mount. A sub-rectangular moulding decorates the centre of the main bar. One half of the mount has been slightly bent downwards and slightly twisted in profile. The metal has cor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete post-medieval cast copper-alloy casket key. The key has a kidney-shaped bow with two internal projections. There is a collar at the junction of bow and stem, with a further trio of decorative collars below. The stem is oval in cross-section. There is a slight notch before the terminal. The rectangular bit is diminutive and solid, wihtout clefts or wards. The metal has corroded to a mid-green colour over red-brown metal. The metal and bow form are characteristically early post-medieval; a similar casket key dated to the 16th century can be found illustrated in Read (2001…
