Copper alloy possible pin fragment. Cast copper alloy object, possibly a pin with an openwork rhomboid head and a shank which is broken at a second step in its diminishing diameter, where the source record photograph may suggest it to be hollow. It can be very hard to distinguish Roman pins from middle Anglo-Saxon pins, but on the whole middle Anglo-Saxon pins have more slender shafts and tend to have collars beneath the heads. Crummy (19…

Lead alloy and iron probable pin head. Cast sub-rectangular plate with five moulded rounded bosses forming a cross shape on its display side – the pattern recalls plate brooches of Weetch Type 9 dated to AD 800-1000 and this might even be one if use of an iron pin were admitted – and with the rusted relict of an iron shank on the back. As a pin, a drilled hole might point to derivation from a degraded species of linked pin. Abraded. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-1000 Length: 19.5mm, Width: 19mm, Thickness: 6.0mm, Weight: 4.73gms

Copper alloy pin head. An almost-complete Middle Saxon pin head, described by the source record as sub-discoidal whereas the object now appears to be sub-triangular, with double collar. Shank lost. Multiple ring and dot decorates one side; reverse is plain and the upper edge appears reworked. This is perhaps due to damage where the metal is very thin and has resulted in a frilled edge. Similar large disc-headed pins are found on all East Yorkshire sites where a Viking presence is suspected, and on Anglo-Saxon sites far to the South. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 800-850 Length: 30.6…
