A complete cast copper alloy early medieval (Anglo Saxon) strap end (cf. Thomas Class A2h). The plate is narrow and oval, waisted to a flared rear end which is characteristically split but incomplete having broken across the rivet holes on the edge. Copper alloy and textile strap end. A pair of plates or a single plate folded lengthways with an ogival outer end and a rivet hole of diameter 1.6mm at its inner end, which was probably engrailed. A further rivet at the front end was only noted during image processing. Woven fabric, now of a buff tint, remains trapped between the plates. This might point to a later medieval date within the available range as sumptuary laws enacted following the Black Death, particularly the Statute of 1369, restricted the wearing of leather straps by the lesser sort. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400…

A probable incomplete early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) copper-alloy strap end with a wedge shaped terminal end which is not split, but has two rivet holes, one through either corner with the remains of copper-alloy rivets within them. The shaft is incomplete and what remains is decorated with four transverse mouldings. Superficially this strap-end is of a similar form to the attachment end of a Thomas Class B type I, however, as the wedge shaped attachment end is not split it may have been created from the foot of a small long brooch (Thomas, 2003, pg4-5, fig2).
