Lead hem wight. Cast discoid weight with a central sunken panel on one side wherein lie three drilled stitching holes. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting a recent date. Though probably most are of Victorian date, these objects continue to be sold today for crafts. The provision of three holes rather than the usual pair is an unusual feature; this is also a little larger than normal for the type. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-2000 Diameter: 33.9mm, Thickness: 3.7mm, Weight: 33.62gms

Lead weight. Cast pyramidal four-sided weight with a flat facet between each of its four sides and round its flat square base, and with a central longitudinal moulded aperture of diameter 3.8mm. Lightly patinated. The mass does not figure in a series recorded from medieval London (Egan 1998), and nor does it closely correspond to subdivisions of either Roman or post-medieval systems of measurement. The object might represent five ounces of 29.2gms under the medieval Tower system used for silver and bread – as the closest correspondence noted for it. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman…

Lead possible shot. A cast object comprising a strip or sprue of width 5mm with a series of seven peloidal balls, each of diameter 4mm and each at the end of a conical ingate. The strip is broken at one end and melted at the other. Patinated. This might be an expedient to cast birdshot or a blunderbuss or shotgun charge of pellets; a mechanical function seems unlikely given the soft nature of the material. Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Lead possible nail fragment. An oval fragment with a dimpled boss on its underside, here suggested to mark the location of a shank formerly sheathed in lead. Patinated. Similar objects from the vicinity retain parts of iron shanks which in this case is thought to be lost. Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead window came fragment. A short length of cast H-section window came with a trapped fragment of dark degraded glass at one end on one side. Patinated. This came would have permitted the setting of two small adjacent panes. The glass is reverting to its constituent ingredients, which is a feature of a medieval ‘forest’ glass made using potash, rather than the more robust soda glasses of earlier and later times. The width of the slot suggests a thickness of c.2.5mm for the panes. The reporting of window came of medieval date among field finds is remarkably rare. Suggested …
