A lead alloy weight. It is shaped like an elongated sphere. The neck is long and flat, sub regtanular in shape. In the centre, near the tip is a suspension hole. The base is flat in the centre and would therefore stand. Weights like these are seen in the Roman (for example SUSS-EA2CCC) and Medieval (NLM-5D1F37) periods. The weight of 192g does not accord with the Roman weight system, as 1 semis is equvilent to 164.5g. It is closer to the Troy system, where 1/2 lb would be 186.5g, this was probably in use from the late 14th century, only being sta…

Several hexagonal merchant weights are recorded on this database, cf YORYM-D21FA8, NLM-8B49B9 without a central perforation. It is possible this is a repurposed casting from such a mould.
