A possible lead weight or possible trial-piece for a stamp of uncertain dating, possibly Late Medieval to Post Medieval circa AD 1400-1800. The object is broadly square in form with rounded corners. The object is flat and undecorated on one side. On the other side is a central moulded circular recessed design. It consists of a beaded border similar to that seen on coins. There appears to be a central pellet and then possibly petals surrounded to form a rose. An impression was made by the recorder however the design was unclear. The object has a grey coloured patina across all su…

A fragment of a lead striking of the dies for a penny of Cnut (1016-35), short cross type (c. AD1029-36; North 790), moneyer: uncertain, mint: London. Ref: North 1994: 168. The fragment is torn, partially folded (this does not appear to be a deliberate act, but probably occured post deposition) and incomplete with parts of the coin design missing. The folding of the sheet has obscured much of what remains of the reverse of the coin and the moneyer's name is not visible even if it survives. The striking itself appears to be reasonably clear and complete although it is difficult to c…

A worn and etched, sheet lead. Medieval pointed oval seal matrix trial piece. Description: On the front is an incised central motif of a star, surrounded by two parallel lines in an oval shape, between the lines is the inscription. The inscription reads "+S'R[O]BERT FIL'I ROGER". The lettering is mostly written upside down and forward so, if impressed wax would read incorrectly back to front. The one exception to this is the "R" for "ROGER", which is retrograde and thus would appear the correct way round. The lettering is still however placed in the order one would expect of a matr…

Lead probable trial piece fragment. A fragment apparently torn from a disc of an estimated diameter of at least 33mm and thickness 1.2mm cut from cast lead sheet. A design and legend is die-stamped on one side, which is taken to be the display face, with an image and lettering standing proud in low relief. The other side has a central blob of pressed and congealed melted lead with a smaller [diameter c.15mm] disc on top. The small disc bears a fungiform or T-shaped motif, again this is stamped and in low relief. The combination of a larger and smaller disc with an element between them…

Lead trial piece. A rounded and flattened fragment of lead melt, more heavily patinated on one side, which has solidified on a flat surface. The object was apparently further flattened and bears the impression of a floral septfoil or octofoil stamp on the other. A complete lead object, probably a trail piece from a seal matrix impression of post-medieval date. The object is sub-circular and bears a faint circular impression which appears to feature a horse and rider approaching from the left of the seal on a finely pelleted background. A lead pad or trial piece from a die stamp of early Anglo-Saxon (7th century) date. The object is flat and sub-rectangular with rounded corners, and has a worn break to one end. A shallow impression has been made on one side, almost certainly by a die stamp for making impressed foil mounts. The decoration is in Salin's Style II, framed within a tapering sub-rectangular border and with rounded lobes at the surviving end. Each lobe is filled with the curl of the beak of a predatory bird with pointed-oval eyes and no headframe. Interlace is present between the beaks. Beneath the birds' h…

Copper alloy Metal Working Debris or Trial Piece. Cast flat sheet or plate with irregular edges, though there were possibly characters incised and/or stamped on both sides, perhaps a trial piece. On one side are the letters M (incised) ?E (composite stamp) and ?E (composite stamp), within an impressed, probably stamped, border. On the other side, the letter P or D has been struck two or three times in a line, and this was possibly repeated above or below. Again, linear marks may be the edge of a stamping tool. The script appears likely to be Late Medieval or Early Post-Medieval. …
