A fragment of a copper-alloy spatula, probably from the early-medieval period. Description: The object consists of a very thin, flat oval-shaped blade with a blunt tip. The blade transitions into a thin handle with an oval cross-section. Most of the handle has been lost due to an old break.  Measurements: Length 48.06mm: Width 15.31mm: Thickness of blade 0.5mm: Weight 3.03g. Discussion: The spatula has probably been made by beating out a rod of copper-alloy. Although it is very comparable to Roman spatulas, there is no Roman material from this findspot, but there…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy spatula of Roman date (c.100-250).  Description: The spatula remains as the anthropomorphic terminal which is in the form of the bust of Minerva. It is a Feugere Type A5 spatulae, with the characteristic high Corinthian helmet, waved hair and drapery. The triangular bust is decorated with a deeply-carved V-shaped groove. Beneath the bust are two raised ribs encircling the narrow waist, from which the terminal fans outwards to the base. The base of the terminal is socketed, with a horizontal groove which would have held an iron blade. The …

An anthropomorphic cast copper-alloy Roman razor or spatula handle. The object is 42.2mm in length and takes the form of a three-quarters bust of a female. The figure is posed with both arms across the chest, possibly originally holding a child, as seen with comparable examples such as SF-3ED040, which may suggest an identification as a mother goddess. The surface is heavily abraded, but details remain in the form of swept-back hair, with the outline of the arms and incised lines detailing the clothing. The lower end has a 14mm wide socket, infilled with rusted iron.

Lead spatula. Cast spatula with a triangular wedge-shaped blade with rounded edges at one end, opposed knops close to its narrowed midpoint, and with three low knife-cut triangular teeth at the other end; a hole of diameter 1.9mm passes through the middle tooth. Bent at the midpoint; patinated. This object was perhaps intended to remove wax from a waxed writing tablet, the hole may be added for suspended wear by the user. Double ended implements were used in both the Roman and early medieval periods; the former is suggested here. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length (as found): …

An incomplete iron object, possibly a wax spatula handle of Feugère's Type B2 (Feugère 1995) dating to the Roman period. The object comprises a oval-section bar, which flattens and then expands at each to form spatulate heads, which are now broken. This type is associated with writing equipment in graves, and can be reasonably confidently associated with wax tablet writing. It is a plain example, comparable to some finds from London (Humphreys forthcoming, WXS26-34). However, its corrosion pattern may indicate that it is more recent, and is perhaps simply a bar with flattened ends. …
