Spade Iron probably of medieval to post medieval date The Spade iron is of U-shaped form and is near-complete, missing one securing lug and part of the blade (with a length of 274mm, a thickness of 7mm and a weight of 579.9g). The spade iron was secured to the wooden spade with a groove, now damaged running on the interior of the iron and by the inward-facing lugs (22mm long) at the apex (where the spade has a width of 174mm). There is no suggestion of attachment rivet holes on the side arms. The interior of the spade iron suggests the dimensions of the wooden spade blade (197mm…

The iron lower edge and sides from a spade blade, probably of Roman date. The remainder of the blade and handle would have been made of wood, with the iron reinforcing the edge. In form, this piece is similar to Roman spades from excavations; however, this form continued in use through the Early Medieval and Medieval periods. This example was on the surface of a mound of probable Roman saltworking debris (based on surrounding pottery and the form of the mound) and therefore is almost certainly Roman.

Part of side branch incorporated into blade much of which is comprised of burr wood. ‘T’ handle with slight rounding from wear but still with well defined whittled angle between handle and shaft. Shaft itself of flattened oval cross section, flat faces to front and rear of artefact, tapering along length with wid…
