A stone (probably dolerite or epidiorite) pounder or hammer, bell-shaped in plan and profile, likely made from a natural cobble. The wider end of the stone appears to have been broken from its original form, but use has continued creating a smooth surface. The narrow end shows little sign of use and was probably only used for the hand to grip the tool. Ashbee (1996) illustrates a similar example from Halangy Down on St. Mary's, Isles of Scilly, which he suggests might have been used as a limpet hammer or for pulverising grit for tempering potter's clay, or woodworking, (page 1…

Object type: POUNDER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Quartzite pounder, circular in plan and spherical in profile with a flattened base caused by the use of this surface for pounding and perhaps grinding. There are a few hollows around the body of the pounder which may have been deliberately chipped away to make it easier to grip. The pounder has been made out of a natural pebble, utilised for its ideal shape and weight. Once deposited in the soil, the pounder has been stained in the area of the grinding surface from being exposed to pink shale or felspar. Jones et al (2002) illustrate another pounder from a Later Bronze Age structure…

Greenstone (dolerite or epidiorite) pounder or hammer, bell-shaped in plan and profile, likely made from a local beach cobble. The hammer stone has impact pecking on the surface of its wider rounded end, as well as its narrower end, suggesting that both ends were used as striking surfaces and that the opposite end was gripped as a hand-held pounder. There is also possible organic staining on the narrow end of the tool, though it is more likely to be iron staining from its proximity to a metal implement in the soil. There are also various plough marks over both of the flatter surfaces o…
