Likely a trading plate, with a late-Medieval to mid post-Medieval date. It has etched decoration, in a variety of motifs. The primary material is copper-alloy, but there seems to be remnants of either silver or pewter in the decoration. Fragment A: The largest fragment, in terms of area, it has a perforated hole at its intact end, which looks to be its Left edge, therefore making it the top LH hole of the entire plate. On its obverse side, there is what looks to be a man's head, a roof of a house, the upper runks of a ladder, and a sun. On its reverse side, there is a raised …

Fragment of a pewter plate of probable post medieval date (c. AD 1670-1730). The artefact is part of the rim of a plate which would have measured approx. 16cm diameter. The artefact is a curved, slightly concaved sheet of pewter (lead alloy) bounded on both sides by incised reeding. Beyond the outer reed is a broken edge of pewter, suggesting the vessel continued beyond this reeding, while beyond the inner reed there is a slight downstep and another irregular broken edge. Both faces have a dark shiny grey patina and significant dents and scratches. The broken edges are very worn and ab…

A complete copper alloy press printing plate, of 19th Century dating. The printing plate is rectangular and flat. All edges are patinated, and original. All text is reversed. An incomplete fragment of a copper alloy press printing plate, of 19th Century dating. The fragment is triangular in shape, with parts of six rows of lettering visible. The vertical edge at the side is original, and would have formed the left hand side of the text (once printed). The other edges are patinated, so are suggestive of post-depositional breakage. The surviving text can be read: [ ] / to go / in wa[ ] / the s[ ] / [ ]ad / [ ]e/. Not enough of the text survives to determine whether it is prose fiction or more factual, but more likely to be prose fiction. It me…

Lead plate. Cast sub-rectangular plate bearing a symmetrical moulded design on one side, flat on the other. The design originates from a small central rhomboid from which eight ribs or rays project. Four ribs have a smaller rounded or rhomboid feature across which the ribs pass, while those ribs or rays between them each pass through a larger rectangle. All eight ribs terminate on a moulded ring and dot of diameter c.7.5mm, and the outer edges of all eight circles project beyond the notional rectangular outline of the plate as a whole, with a broader field which coincides with the thi…

Copper alloy plate fragment. A corner broken raggedly from a flat plate bearing deeply engraved and possibly figurative motifs. What now remains includes a plain border along one side only, a tapered band of reticulate or net-like squares, and, adjacent, two massy objects subdivided by short lines, perhaps petals, or even hands. A groove on the back follows the un-bordered edge. This could be from a printing plate, as the strong definition of details would carry over onto a printed image. If so, the cuprous material ['copper-plate'] and strongly defined features could suggest an early…

White metal plate probably dating from the post-medieval to modern period 1800-2000AD. The plate is stamped with the initials *JC* with hallmark that is difficult to make out and is possibly foreign to Britain. The plate has 7 fairly modern looking pressed rivets and a white metal tubular wire that has been attached to the plate on one side. The plate is decorated with two indented transverse lines on a raised plate perpendicular to the plate. The overall impression is of a decorative silver belt that would not appear to have a practical usage and may well relate to art deco. The l…
