Copper alloy handle fragment, possibly from a post-medieval or modern pistol or other weapon. Cast plano-convex section straight-sided tapered object fragment with deeply cross-cut decoration producing a pattern or rhomboids across its surface, broken at either end, perhaps across a fixing point at the wider end. Now slightly curved, though whether this is an original feature is unclear. The patterning might be apt to a function as a side plate for a grip handle from which this piece has become detached. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: 38.8mm, Width: 16.2mm, Thic…

Copper alloy object, kindly identified as part of a pistol or musket of English manufacture by Kevin Leahy. Kevin comments as follows: 'I think I know what this is: the long lug with a pin through it is typical of the way that English guns were fixed together and I think that what you've got is a bit of trigger guard from a flintlock or percussion gun'. Cast curved plate with U-shaped ends, one broader than the other, and with a long U-shaped lug projecting from its concave side. The lug has a filled drilled hole of diameter c.2mm, suggesting the object pivoted when in use. A fur…

Beneath this is a horizontal collar, before it continues down with a short section with a square cross section. The lower part has a circular cross section and a left hand screw thread. The screw was used to hold the flint in place. It measures 37.3 mm in length, max diameter of 9.8 mm and it weighs 4.5 g. A similar top jaw screw was recorded as SUR-1165B5 and is of Post medieval dating (AD 1700 to AD 1800).

A Post Medieval copper alloy flint-lock pistol barrel, dating to the 18th century. The barrel is cylindrical, faceted at one end to form three panels on the top. The barrel tapers from the faceted end to the centre and flares to the muzzle. There is part of the iron firing mechanism still connected to the barrel at the faceted end. The mechanism is rectangular with a broken rectangular projection at the top and a semi-circular indentation below. The edges of this iron mechanism are worn, showing a laminated texture beneath. At the muzzle end of the barrel are two projections, an oval …

An unidentified Post Medieval object. It consists of a dome which is pointed oval in plan. The dome is hollow and at one end is extends into a bar of rectangular section which bends back beneath the dome and terminates in a bifurcated break, perhaps where the was originally a hole or a slot. There is a narrow raised line round the edge of the dome and along the edge of the bar, but it fades out at the bend. The border is not interrupted at the other end of the domed area, indicating that there was never a matching bar there. There is a large circular hole in the apex of the dome. The …

Cast brass trigger guard bow from a pistol, incised with a single central six-petalled flower within a linear border. Both ends of the guard bow have broken off, so that the original length is unknown, but one attachment bar would have been connected to the trigger mechanism, and the other, extended bar would have been screwed on to the stock. The style of the decoration of this guard, and the fact that it is made out of brass and not sheet steel, suggests that it probably dates from the 18th century, looking at various publications and websites. The associated brass ring a…

A copper alloy post-medieval trigger guard, most likely from a pistol, based on the size. Having put in a query to Peter G Smithurst, Senior Curator, Firearms at the Royal Armouries Museum and Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield, I received the following informative detail - "the chances are it was privately owned, or perhaps part of some local militia armoury who had weapons made to their own specifications rather than following strict military designs. The fact that it appears to be brass makes it more likely to be militia than civilian since most civilia…

Incomplete cast brass frizzen from a flintlock pistol. This was probably from a military-type pistol with iron barrel and brass furniture. The corroded remains of the iron attachments, probably the screw, have formed a skin on the back of the clamp. The clearance hole for the bolt was used to attach the frizzen to the barrel. The frizzen is part of the hammer, but the hammer section is missing, and would have projected from the broken edge at right angles to the existing piece. The hammer was used to strike the flint which was held in a clamp opposite to the hammer above the barrel of…

Part of a cast copper alloy post medieval flintlock pistol. This pistol is identical to another one recorded on the PAS database in Norfolk, record number: NMS-0238F3. These pistols were meant to be fired. It is possible that this pistol is simply a toy but it could have been a small pistol that ladies would carry on their person to protect themselves from would-be attackers. The barrel is hexagonal. The interior of the barrel is circular; approximately 8.8mm x 9mm bore. Some iron corrosion obscures the detail of how the firing mechanism was housed. A rectangular open block has …

Decorative cast copper alloy handle mount from the butt end of a flintlock pistol dating to the 18th or early 19th century. This is a mount to fit over the bottom and front of the wooden handle of a flintlock pistol. The mount is simply decorated with a concentric series of four mouldings on the butt end. The base of the gently curving projecting arm has a scallop design either side of a double linear moulding with fades or has been worn away near the top of the arm. The mount has broken at apex of the arm, just before the mount thins, where it would have developed into the trigger gua…
