Copper alloy parasol fitting. A conical ferrule of sheet metal with a collared and rounded terminal, and with opposed driven holes of diameter 2.4mm towards its open end. This would be set at the end of one of the ribs of an umbrella or parasol; the ball end is an uncommon but considerate feature which may have minimised the prospect of injury to others were the parasol used in a crowded setting. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900 Length: 21.4mm, Diameter: 7.2mm, Thickness (at mouth of socket): 0.2mm, Weight: 2.08gms

Copper alloy parasol fitting. Conical ferrule: a slightly tapered sleeve with a solid U-shaped end with a drilled hole of diameter 2mm, and with opposed fixing holes of diameter 2mm close to its open end which retains traces of decayed wood; side split. From the end of a rib of an umbrella or parasol. A number of similar objects has been reported from Scawby, North Lincolnshire. Copper alloy and wood possible parasol fitting or ferrule. A tapered flat-ended conical sheet metal sheath in which a fragment of round-section rod or dowel [0f diameter 5.8mm] remains preserved. Objects of similar size and character - reported frequently from Scawby, North Lincolnshire, but also from other locations - may be the tips from the ribs of a parasol or umbrella. This could explain why they are relatively common: a single discarded parasol could yield numerous detached ferrules as its organic components decayed or fragmented. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Le…

Copper alloy ferrule; one of a number of objects now known to be from the ends of the ribs of a parasol. A small conical tubular object with a crimped solid end through which a hole of diameter 2.5mm has been drilled. The tube has a small [diameter 1.5mm] hole for a fixing pin in its wall towards its open end. The object retains tan coloured fragments of a wooden rod within. These objects have been frequently reported by this finder from Scawby, North Lincolnshire, though examples occasionally appear elsewhere. Their This is among the smaller examples. Copper alloy parasol ferrule retaining wood fragments. A small cast conical tube closed at one end, where a U-shaped lug projects with a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm. Fragments of wood remain within the tube, with ferrous corrosion from an iron fixing pin which passed through the lower wall of the tube. Set at the end of a wooden rod of diameter c.7mm, from the end of a parasol rib. Numerous examples have been reported from Scawby, North Lincolnshire, by this finder, who exhibits a rare talent for their discovery. The survival of wood in the tube - a common feature - must suggest a …

Copper alloy ferrule retaining wood fragments. A cast hollow slightly tapered tube with a semi-circular lug projecting from its narrower end with a drilled hole of diameter c.2mm. The tube retains decayed wood, and two pinheads of diameter 2mm appear close to the lower edge, opposite each other, and retained the tube on the thin wooden rod it capped. A series of identical objects has been reported from Scawby, North Lincolnshire. These were also described as ferrules, and have been identified as the caps from the ends of the wooden ribs of a parasol. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 180…

Copper alloy parasol fitting, from the end of one of its ribs. A tiny cast tube, open at one end with an aperture of diameter 2.5mm, and with a drawn wire [diameter 0.8mm] loop at the other end. A number of similar objects of equally uncertain purpose have been reported from the vicinity; the others are invariably larger than this example. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900. Copper alloy and iron possible ferrule: from the end of a parasol rib. A cylindrical object with a narrower U-shaped lug at its end with a drilled hole of diameter c.2.5mm passing through the lug. An iron pin of diameter 2.5mm passes through the tube at its open end, probably reinforcing its attachment to a wooden rod. A number of similar objects have been reported from the vicinity. Copper alloy and wood ferrule, probably from the end of a parasol rib or handle. Cast cylindrical tube with an expanded end, retaining a flat-ended fragment of a wooden stick of diameter [now] 10mm. A drilled fixing hole of diameter 2mm appears close to the narrower end of the ferrule. The measurements may suggest the object was made using the metric system, which may suggest a date after 1800, and, in an English context, after the Napoleonic Wars. The preservation of wood may owe something to its copper alloy sheathing, as well as implying a recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval…

Copper alloy and iron parasol fitting, from the end of a rib. Cast conical tube, open at its wider end and with a sharp constriction and ball head terminal at the other. A hole of diameter c.2mm is drilled through opposite sides, and is immediately adjacent to another which is filled by a corroded iron pin. Both features relate to the fixing, and possibly re-fixing, of this object . The outer surface bears extensive traces of black paint or oil. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900. Copper alloy ferrules (a and b), from the ends of the ribs of a parasol. Each is a cast and milled tapered hollow cylinder with a solid apical round-ended lug with a transverse aperture of diameter circa 2.5mm. These objects were attached to thin wooden rods, of which mineralised traces remain, the union being reinforced by a transverse rivet at the base of the ferrule. These are the latest objects of this type to be reported from this vicinity; others include NLM-EA3537, NLM-6638E0 and NLM-662EE3. Copper alloy parasol fitting, from the end of a rib. Cast conical cylinder with an apical loop formed by crimping of its narrower end. This terminal bears a drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm, and its stepped sides suggest it was intended to limit movement to a single plane. At its wider end, the cylinder bears scars indicating the position of a transverse rivet with a head diameter of 2.3mm - its further extent is lost, though its other end is visible, showing it went through the object off-centre. A similar, larger, object retaining degraded wood (NLM-662EE3) was reported along wit…

Copper alloy and wood parasol fitting, from the end of one of the ribs. A cast cylindrical sheath retaining degraded wood within. A transverse rivet of diameter 1.6mm (only its ends remain) passed through the sides of the cylinder to secure a wooden rod or dowel; this feature was kindly noted by Brian Kearsley. The end of the cylinder bears a robust integrally cast lug with a drilled hole for suspension of diameter 2.5mm; the stepped sides of the lug appear intended to limit movement to a single plane and its sides and top are filed, perhaps to assist this movement. A similar, smaller…

A silver fitting from a cane, parasol or scent bottle dating from the late eighteenth or nineteenth century. The fitting is a band of sheet silver joined into a loop with a butt joint. The loop is tapered so it is wider at the base than at the top. The band is decorated with a stamped design consisting of several elements. There is a border of flowers and leaves round the base and a rope-work border round the top. The area between has a dimpled background and springs of flowers and foliage in relief. There is also a raised oval cartouche, presumably where the owner’s initials would h…
