Lead and lead alloy offcut. A strip of cast lead sheet of thickness 2.2mm with a thinner [c. 1.5mm] narrower and even less regular strip of lead alloy of a markedly darker tint superimposed on one side. The object was then folded in half. Both components have been cut along the same edge, presumably at the same time. The mass of this object was almost exactly the same as a rough disc considered as a possible Viking Age lead weight presented along with it (NLM-605A12). However, the loose provenance offered for this small group does not permit confirmation of any relationship betwee…

Lead offcut. A rectangular strip or strips of cast lead sheet of thickness 1.8mm, tightly rolled into a neat cylindrical form, with vertical striations on its outer surface and also across the ends, showing the marking was applied after the lead strip was rolled. Patinated. This may have served as an improvised playing piece for a board game, or the markings may have conferred an improved grip, or it may simply be waste metal gathered for recycling. The object weighs almost exactly one averdepois ounce, so use as a weight in a domestic setting might also be considered. Suggested date: …

Lead possible offcut. Oval plate probably cut from cast sheet, with three deliberate piercings disposed in an uneven row, of rhomboid and elongated triangular forms, all from the tips of different knives [the triangular holes] or a dagger [the rhomboid hole]. Patinated. A function as an end-piece in a sheath or scabbard might be considered, but the distribution of the marks militates against this.
