Lead possible net sinker. A fragment of thin [1.5mm] cast lead sheet or foil folded or rolled to tubular form, now flattened; patinated. The lead sheet is thinner than usual for this artefact type. If not a net sinker, possibly a later line weight. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 28mm, Width: 12.5mm, Thickness: 5.1mm, Weight: 9.71gms.

Lead possible net sinker. A weight made by rolling a sub-rectangular scrap of cast sheet lead, probably achieving a slightly overlapping seam though this is now disrupted, perhaps by removal of the object from the selvedge of a net or, given that it is lighter than many formal parallels, from a fishing line, as is kindly suggested by the finder. At nearby Flixborough, tubular lead net weights were dated to the Middle Saxon period. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 21.3mm, Width: 10.8mm, Thickness (sheet): 1.8mm, Weight: 8.43gms

Lead net sinker. A long tube of cast sheet of thickness 2.1mm, neatly rolled round the selvedge of a net of diameter c.3mm with a butted seam, now bent, patinated and lightly squashed. Objects of this form and construction were reported from high status occupation at Middle Saxon Flixborough in a location beside the River Trent and may have been used to weight fishing or wildfowling nets. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 700-850 Length: 58.8mm, Width: 13.9mm, Thickness (overall): 8.4mm, Weight: 41.24gms

A cast lead net sinker or line weight of unknown date, 400 BC - AD 1800. It would have been circular in cross-section and oval in profile with tapering ends but it is now squashed flat into a sub rectangular shape. There is a flattened circular perforation through the centre down the long axis. Measurements are; length 31.6mm, width 19.4mm, thickness 8.6mm and weight 36.70g. This weight is probably a type that would have been positioned around the edge of a net, probably used for fishing or netting birds, to hold it taut. The dating of such weights is difficu…

A small ovoid perforated lead object which is possibly a net sinker, spindle whorl, a bead or a perforated weight. It is of unknown date, probably Roman to Post medieval, AD 43 - 1900. It is circular in cross-section and oval in profile, with a narrow perforation down the centre. The weight is 27.8mm long, 21.7mm maximum diameter and weighs 61.29g. The mass is fairly close to a two ounce weight, but the irregular shape and narrow hole perhaps make this object more likely to be a net sinker.

Lead weight or net sinker. Cast cylindrical weight with a central aperture of diameter 8.2-8.5mm, one recently flattened longitudinal facet is perhaps adventitious damage. Patinated overall. The shrinkage at one end tends to confirm this object was made in its present form, rather than being cut from a pipe. Similar simple weights are used by modern sea anglers, and this might have been used at the edge of a net. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900 Length: 33.1mm, Diameter: 20mm, Thickness (wall): 5.4mm, Weight: 71.14gms

Lead net sinker. A tubular weight formed by rolling an irregular fragment of thick [3.2mm] cast lead sheet around either a former or the selvedge of a net with an overlapping seam. The metal has a pale grey tint, and retains soil trapped in the middle of the roll. This form is locally dated to the Middle Saxon period at Flixborough, North Lincolnshire, though this type of weight continued in use until at least the late medieval period, to which a group from a boat at Blackfriars, London, is dated. This would be at the heavier end of the range of such weights. Suggested date: Unknown, E…
