Copper alloy possible needle case. A neatly rolled tube of sheet metal of thickness 1mm, with a longitudinal butted seam, slightly tapered, and with a tiny flat turned over to close the narrower end. The imaginative use of rolled construction in sheet metal is known from Roman contexts, while the idiosyncratic method might be equally at home in an Anglo-Saxon context. Slightly bent. One end of a silver sheet tubular item, possibly a needle case or similar. The piece was originally tubular or oval in section formed of a rectangular piece of sheet rolled edge to edge and meeting in a seam down one side. The slightly convex faces suggest it was originally oval in section although it is now squashed flat. One end is incomplete with an irregular break. The other appears complete and has a slightly thinner, plain tubular piece of silver sheet fitted inside the first creating a step in thickness and width where they join. The seam has opened down the side of both tubes …

A complete and elaborate copper alloy needle case dating to between the medieval period. The case consists of a single rolled sheet of copper alloy with a pinched together lower terminal. The sheet has been cut at the pinched terminal on four lines, forming four flaps, these allow the terminal to be pinched and neatly folded in. The joints have then been soldered to prevent the contents of the case (needles) from falling out. The case has then been decorated with incised lines after being assembled. The top of the case has a incised band running round the circumference with vertical …

Cast cu-alloy folded needle case or needle holder cap dating from the medieval ages, i.e. c. 14th century. The cap is small and of simple construction: a rectangular piece of sheet metal was folded over four times around its long axis with the last two folds (out of five) overlapping to form a case. Along the top of the rectangular sheet, there would be at two intervals (to coincide with the second and fourth side of the final folded case) a small extra square of metal which would then be folded over one another to form a simple cap. Before folding, the cap had been decorated with a si…

Cast lead alloy top of a needle case. The object has a domed top with ridges radiating from this to a raised band with diagonal ridges. Below this the object is rectangular and flattened. The decoration is unclear in this part but may be vertical rows of raised dots. A casting seam is visible at the side edges, with a rectangular loop on each side. The bottom edge appears tightly closed but would have originally been open. This resembles find LON-14F404.
