An icomplete Medieval copper-alloy key for turning a peg dating to circa AD 1200-1400. At one end is a rectangular socket. The shaft tapers into the bow. At the junction of the bow are three moulded collards. The bow tapers inwards into a suspension loop. Two prongs emerge from either side of the suspension loop and terminate in ancient breaks. They would have curved downwards to be used as a handle.
Similar keys with various designs of bows but similar expanding hollow shanks are illustrated by Egan (1998:244) no. 747 and 748, the former from a later 14th century context..…

Description: the key remains as the shaft, bow, and suspension loop. The suspension loop is circular with bevelled edges and is integrally cast to the rectangular bow of the key. Two stubs which are the remains of now broken projections, sit between the base of the suspension loop and each side of the top of the bow. The bow is the same width along its length where it meets a six-ridged collar. From the base of the collar, the trapezoid, hollow shank flares and terminates in a slightly rounded-edged rectangular b…

Copper alloy and iron tuning key. A solid D-shaped flat-sided handle, apparently sheathed in copper alloy, but with a ferrous metal core from which projects the stub of a corroded shank of diameter c.4mm, here taken to be the stem around which instrument strings would be wrapped. Post Medieval key from a musical instrument. The key is made from copper alloy and consists of bar linking two open rings, one broken, perhaps originally oval and aparently set asymetrically: the central ring is circular, 17.1mm diameter, with a chamfered inner edge. On the underside of the bar between these two elements is a trapezoid lug, made up of two parallel plates with a transverse pin between them, suggesting that the lug was an atriculation about which the bar rocked. The other end of the bar is expanded to 14.8mm and terminates in an ogival curve. Fixed to end of the unders…

A complete medieval copper-alloy key of a type thought to have been used for tightening the keys on musical instruments - though other uses may be equally likely. This key, which is now slightly bent, has a wide openwork terminal in the form of a fleur-de-lys which sits above a collar. The apex of the lys is further decorated on each side with a pair of short grooves. The lower end flares out into a box of rectangular section in which is a tapering hole 16mm in depth. Dated examples from London suggest a date range of c1350-1400.

A medieval copper alloy key with drooping foliate terminals, a central diamond-shaped knop and a single wide collar. Below the collar is a tapering hollow box intended for tightening a key. A number of keys of similar form have been found (cf Egan 1998, no. 747) and an interpretation as tuning keys for musical instruments has been persuasively suggested.

Copper alloy possible tuning key. Cast key with a kidney shaped bow decorated by florid vegetal mouldings, and separated from a round section stem by a collar. The stem expands at its end to form a hollow bit, which has fine screw thread within it. This was perhaps intended to adjust the tension of an instrument string. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1850-1900.

Cast copper alloy key for the tuning of musical instruments, dating from the medieval period, that is the 14th or 15th century. The key is hammer-shaped, with moulded decoration and only slightly damaged at the bottom. It should have had an opening at the bottom, conical in shape which would have been used for the tuning of (possibly stringed) instruments, as similar finds in the National Music Museum suggest (http://orgs.usd.edu/nmm/News/Newsletter/December2010/ToolsArticle.html). The head is hammer-shaped with a (solic) conical side and a flat side. There are mouldings in the centre…

Copper alloy
Possible Instrument Key. Cast anchor shaped plate with a drilled hole of diameter 7mm, the edge of the hole is unevenly worn on one side of the object; the perforated plate is at the end of a rectangular section shank which is broken. A speculative identification as a tuning key or peg from a musical instrument is offered; this reporter would welcome better informed opinion.

Copper alloy.
Possible Key. Cast, with solid shank of square section and a crescentic or anchor-shaped bow of more rounded section. The shank is expanded to achieve a round section where it meets the bow, and either wear or attachment of another element ?of different material? May introduce irregularity of the surface here. Though loosely associated with locks, an alternative use as a small tap or a robust tuning key would seem possible. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Length: 61.17mm, Width: 30.65mm, Thickness: 9.70mm, Weight: 20.23gms.

Possibly a Medieval to Post Medieval peg key. The key has a hollow, cylindrical stem with a central swelling. The handle is damaged and incomplete, formed of two projecting arms pointing upwards at a 45 degree angle, before bending in at a right angle and pointing towards each other. There is a worn break at the end of each arm. It has a dark green-brown patina, and there is some pitting on the surface from corrosion. It is 45.73mm long, 27.66mm wide across the handle, and the stem has a maximum diameter of 11.38mm. It weighs 18.10grams. Similar objects can be seen in Egan 1998, The Me…

A medieval key cast in copper alloy probably used for tightening the square-ended bone keys on musical instruments. The object terminates in a quatrefoil bow, openwork, with four circular perforations (Dia.: c. 5.4mm). There is a moulded bifid cusp between each of the four spandrels (cf. LVPL992 on this database). The bow is slightly bent compared with the stem. The stem is octagonal in cross-section. It features a rectangular collar at the junction with the bow and another at the terminal. The collars are c. 7.35mm thick; thicker than the stem (6.4mm) and the bow (5.15mm). They both …
