Half a Roman copper-alloy obverse die matrix for the production of commemorative coins of Faustina the Elder (Faustina I) / DIVA FAVSTINA, dating to c. AD 141-61. Coins for Faustina I were struck in the reign of her husband, Antoninus Pius (AD 138-61). The diameter of the die between the beading (19 mm) indicates that it was intended for the production of silver denarii. The legend would have been [DI]VA FAVST[INA]. The type was a [draped] bust with elaborate hairstyle, coiled on top of Faustina's head. For examples of regular coins of this type, see BMC IV, pl. 8, nos. 14-15. T…

A thick and solid copper alloy rod, possibly a coin die, possibly dating from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 150 BC - AD 410. The object is circular in cross-section and is 32.3mm long, 15.4mm in diameter and weighs 48.3g. One end is complete. It has a chamfered or bevelled edge and a smooth flat surface. The other end, suggested to be the die face, is rough and irregular. Possible traces of the letters S C, or traces of a possible design may be visible, but they are not clear enough to be able to identify the design or coin type. An impression taken of this end is also inconclus…

A solid iron object, possibly the lower half of a pair of Roman coin dies. The object is roughly cylindrical, splaying out slightly from the circular, 17.74mm diameter 'striking' surface to a sub-rectangular base (25 x 29mm). No evidence of the design of the coin struck with the die remains unfortunately. Two other Roman iron coin dies, BUC-D08867 and BUC-D099B6 and numerous coin blanks were found nearby at Wing, Bucks and a hoard consisting of three pots of coin blanks and a pair of iron dies were also found nearby at Fenny Stratford [Zeepvat 1994].

An Iron Age coin die, late 2nd century BC. This die (punch) was used in the production of so called "Gallo-Belgic A" staters or ancient imitations of this coinage. It is the upper or reverse die, which carries a horse and chariot design ultimately derived from the gold staters of Philip II of Macedon. John Sills (Oxford University) has provisionally identified the image as a late style reverse, similar to (Sills, Gaulish and early British gold coinage, 2003) series 7, amongst the final stages in Gallo-Belgic A production. The die is cylindrical in shape with the incised design on t…

A solid iron truncated pyramid 57mm high While the base is rectangular the striking surface is in the form of a rectangle with the corners removed. Considered to be a die for striking coins. The date of the die is currently under discussion having been placed in the Roman period by Sam Moorhead. However the finds of Roman coin blanks from nearby in the same field also suggest that it is likely to be Roman. Further research is needed into coin dies and comparison with those from the nearby [6.11mls north] Fenny Stratford coin manufacturing hoard [Zeepvat 1994]
