Possibly a pommel for the butt end of a knife handle. Due to its patina, it appears to be a post-Medieval example. It is copper-alloy, but appears to be more zinc-rich than other copper-alloyed objects on the database. It has a light grey-green patina. Eventhough it has been somewhat crushed during deposition, it is still possible to ascertain that it was originally sub-square in shape. Its design (on its outer face) features two more squares, oneinside the other, etched into the metal, and within the central square, there are etched lines radiating out in all directions from the…

A complete Post Medieval cast pewter or tin alloy screw cap, c.AD 1700-1800. This object is the cap of a small bottle, which would have screwed into place. It is shaped like a crown with a central point that may have ended in a cross, but has since broken below the tip. The small and precise decoration was made as part of the casting mould, which suggests a later Post-Medieval date. This cap is the right sizeand shape for a perfume or snuff bottle, popular during this period.

Silver lid of a windcap for a pipe, mostly likely a meerschaum pipe, made of a thin sheet of silver. The top engraved with a foliate design. Around the sides are a series of 10 square shaped protrusions. This cap would originally have been fitted by a hinge to a flat plate that would have been attached to the pipe. The flat plate is likely to have been hallmarked, if English, or been plain if it is of continental manufacture. This flat plate is missing however there is a 'cut out' on the underside of the cap that marks where the hinges would have been. Opposite this 'cut out' is an in…

Copper alloy probable cap or lid from a small container. Cast rectangular concavo-convex object with a flange around its edge, and another round the inner edge of its underside, probably to engage the top of a small container. The former would facilitate opening, and the latter woukld assure a tightly sealed closure. An oval hole lies near one corner, though whether a casting flaw, a deliberate feature or fortuitous damage is uncertain. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Length: 16.2mm, Width: 16.6mm, Thickness (overall): 3.3mm, Weight: 2.59gms.

Copper alloy Fitting. Cast hollow conical object with a broad basal rim, tapering towards a concentrically moulded apex and surmounted by a waisted rectangular lug. The lug bears an off-centre transverse drilled perforation of diameter1.8mm. Two similar opposed and off-centre drilled perforations appear in the lower body of the object, together with a dimple indicating an abortive attempt to position one of them. Though the upper perforation might have served for the suspension of this bell-like object, the lower pair would seem more likely to have accommodated pins or othe…

A large lead alloy vessel cap or possible measuring cup, flared towards the lip. Now squashed and distorted, the object has two linear decorative bands running around the circumference just above the lip. There is a small iron object, possibly a rivet or part of an attachment chain retained close to one edge of the lip - there is a similar hole opposite the first although this does not show any iron corrosion. These holes and the possible iron rivet / chain were probably part of the method of securing the cap to the vessel or container so that it would not be lost. Although hard to …

Copper alloy fragment of a cap that has been manufactured from a long seamless drawn out tube. The edge of the band has been machine bevelled and looks modern. The remains of cut hay are evident on the surface of the band and some fragments are embedded into the layer of corrosion product on the outside of the band, suggesting that it has decayed recently. The pink discolouration of the copper underneath the layer of corrosion product is also indicative of a modern piece.
