A fragment from a copper alloy clapper bell, dating to the late Medieval to Post-Medieval period. The fragment comes from the lower everted rim of the bell. Two parallel moulded raised bands, spaced c. 3mm apart, can be seen to run parallel to the bottom edge, the lowest band being part of the bell's lower rim. The interior of the fragment, is smooth and undecorated. The metal has a dark brown patina with the appearance of pewter, gunmetal or 'bell bronze', indicating a high tin content. The fragment is 47.54mm wide, 30.46mm high, and 4.24mm thick. It w…

Copper alloy bell. Cast rumbler bell, of spherical form and one-piece construction, formed by the inward folding and closing of four sub-triangular leaves and with a small oval integral top loop, now broken across a small drilled hole. Traces of gilding appear. Probably for attachment to clothing, or even a jester’s hat given this is an unusually massy example (cf. Egan and Prtichard 1991, fig. 219). Suggested date: Late Medieval, 1350-1400 Height: 25.5mm, Diameter: 21.9mm, Weight: 13.10gms

A fragment probably of a Post-Medieval copper alloy crotal bell, dating to AD 1500 - 1700. The fragment consists of an uneven four sided convex piece of copper alloy that would have formed part of one half of a spherical shaped bell which usually had two holes connected by a slit in the lower half and a suspension loop on the upper half. The outer surface of the fragment is decorated with a series of moulded semi circles with a pellet in the centre of each. These shapes are placed in rows to form a 'fish scale design' and cover the object. A shield motif or rectangul…

A sheet copper-alloy bell of Medieval date, about AD 1200 - 1400. The form of this piece suggests it may have been a horse harness pendant (cf. Griffiths 1986: 4, no. 20 cited in BH-95B355).  The bell chamber is made from a piece of sheet metal which has had its corners folded inwards, creating a void in which the 'pea' is enclosed. It does not appears to be magnetic, suggesting the pea is made of copper alloy. The hanger is a bar which projects from the apex of the bell; it is of circular cross section and tapers to a rounded end with a circular suspen…
