Lead weight, made from offcut. A fragment of cast lead of trapezoid section, with cut and chatter marks on all sides; patinated. The mass might approach that of one lighter Viking-Age Ora/Ore comprising six sub-units of 4.07gms to enable use as a weight at that time, though the correspondence with that value is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter. Other finds from the vicinity are of mainly Roman date, though with later material present. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-950 Length: 24.0mm, Width: 15.3mm, Thickness: 9.3mm, Weight: 23.22gms

Lead weight. A small weight made by hammering an oval droplet of solidified lead melt leaving the imprint of the hammer-blow visible on one side, and then piercing a conical hole at a projecting lug from the same side. Patinated. Presumably for use with a fishing line. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500 Length: 21.7mm, Width: 14.4mm, Thickness: 4.4mm, Weight: 7.75gms

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven surface with off-centre dimple and a flat base; perhaps cast in an open mould suggesting the flat side to have been uppermost at the time of fabrication. Opposed pairs of nicks appear on the flat side. The metal retains a grey tint suggesting its relatively recent date. Though a weight close to this mass was reported from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, table 15) though it was not thought to respect any prevailing standard. This object might alternatively represent one and a half averdepois ounces, perhaps as a homemade weight for the k…

Lead weight. Cast discoid weight with an uneven upper surface on which appear straight lines moulded in bold relief. The lines may represent two separate arrowhead forms or perhaps an untidy monogram including letter forms resembling M and V. On the base – or the top as cast in an open mould - there is a central dimple with a crudely incised triangle around it. Patinated. The combination of relief features, dimple and incised base recur in medieval London (e.g. Egan 1998 fig. 233 no. 993, see also no. 990) where they may respect a medieval standard (ibid. table 15), and were poss…

Lead and copper alloy weight. Cast plano-convex oval or coffee-bean-shaped object with an embedded longitudinal copper alloy strip [of length 17.7mm and width 1.3mm] which appears on both the flat and convex or keeled sides of the object. There is the suspicion of a basal rim, which might be apt to a piece for a board game, as kindly suggested by the finder. Patinated. The neat and vulvate appearance might point to a Roman date. The flat base would permit use as a standing weight with a balance, possibly representing one quarter uncia. Inset objects are more usually associated with Vik…

Lead possible weight. Cast heater-shield-shaped plate with an indistinct symmetrical motif on its display side, possibly a lis or a crowned motif; patinated. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a pilgrim badge. The quasi-heraldic form, and perhaps the charge as well were it clearer, might both associate this with the 14th-century English vogue for heraldic motifs, which might be worn or carried by those with no noble connection or pretension. There is no apparent means of attachment. The mass equates to about one half of an averdepois ounce, thus respecting a system introdu…

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with a pinched apex with drilled hole for suspension, flat-based, patinated. A flat base would permit use as a standing weight in a scale pan. The approximate mass of this object recurs amongst lead weights of other forms from medieval London; its correspondence with the values of early medieval weights is less exact than would normally be deemed significant by this reporter, while the finder kindly suggests a Roman date and a function as a steelyard poise. The apical hole could also permit use as a line weight, also a probably medieval usage. Suggested…

Copper alloy and lead weight. Cast discoid weight with bevelled edge and raised rim, perhaps part of a nested set. It appears a central drilled hole of diameter 5.1mm was filled with lead in an attempt to amend or correct – the original casting has a small chip at its edge and is heavily worn – the mass of a weight representing one averdepois ounce. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800 Diameter: 33.2mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 27.07gms

Copper alloy possible weight. Cast trapezoid flat-sided weight. The mass is near-equivalent to a single unit of 4.43gms as is thought to have governed silver bullion transactions in areas under Danish Viking control. Almost all the weights hitherto considered to relate to this system are made of lead, and most represent multiple units, though there is no reason why other materials could not be put to the same use. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-950 Length: 14.5mm, Width: 13.1mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 4.38gms

Lead weight. Cast sub-discoid flat-sided disc with suggestion of a rim on either side, patinated. Form and surface condition could suggest a Roman date. However, the mass equates almost exactly with three Viking Age units of 4.07gms, as are thought to have been used in areas under Danish Viking influence to govern transactions in silver bullion, and perhaps for a period thereafter where such practices had become established. A weight made in the [then] familiar style of a Roman weight but observing Viking weights and measures might point to Anglo-Saxon involvement in its fabrication. S…

Lead possible weight. Cast oval plano-convex object, pierced with a possibly drilled hole on the site of a short cut at its edge, and with a broad cut across its flat surface; patinated. This might have been cast from scrap as a tiny ingot as the underside is rough and perhaps sanded but the hole suggests it was then put to some suspended use. Improvised use – perhaps for only a single operation – as a palm guard might equally be entertained. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1500 Length: 41.5mm, Width: 33.8mm, Thickness: 10.1mm, Weight: 58.57gms

Lead weight. A small cast sub-cylindrical lead weight with a step at its mid-point and a tapered round-topped and drilled loop above the step at its top. The form and provision for suspension might point to use as a steelyard poise – a steelyard weight was reported along with this object – though a flat base would also permit use as a standing or scale pan weight. Patinated. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 15.7mm, Height: 27mm, Weight: 31.96gms

Copper alloy weight. Viking weight in the shape of a cube with cut-off ends. Six dots stamped onto large surfaces, only one on smaller ones. Trace of silvering/tinnning.
